Hi,

My gearbox needs taking down, stripped and silicone needs to be reapplied...however, won't know extent of further damage (if any) until gearbox is down. Mechanic can't see no cracks, but he's charging £580 for labour and approx. £60 for oil and silicone seal. With VAT, I'm looking at £720. Cost will rise, if any other bits need changing! :sign_unfair:

Does anyone know of a specialist who could quote me cheaper labour costs?

Cheers!

I know a gearbox specialist - but they're in Gateshead! BUT, to repair my 6 speed box was going to cost £287.50 all in, but the box is already off the car and I could take it to him.

If it costs say £100 to get it to him and back via courier, that's £387.50, then all you need to know is how much it's going to cost to get it off at your end.

I take it yours is a 5 speed so probably lighter, cheaper to post, and perhaps easier to repair, cheaper to fix.

Obviously there's a few dependants like:

What's wrong with yours at mo?
How many miles has it done?

Mine's done about 125k and he said the seals wouldn't need done cos they're bullet proof. Maybe would need if 200k.

Let me know and I'll give you his number for a chat.

Cheers.

3d transmissions fixed the gearbox in my old golf, It was warranty work so not to sure on costs heres there website www.3dtransmissions.com seems quite impressive the collect and deliver aswell in your area,

Cheers Matt

I got 6-speed. Not exactly sure what the problem is, most likely that casing is cracked, so we'll have to see. I will keep all options open. The problem isn't getting it fixed, it's the labour costs, ridiculous! I should've become a mechanic! Cheers though!

Bexhill Gearboxes are in east sussex, give them a call & ask as they have good rep in south IIRC, but tbh labour charges for that work is fair tbh, its a ***** job & given what needs doing you cant complain, goto audi & make sure you wear no pants cause they'll buttfeck you big time, saves dropping your trousers then, lol, then maybe you'll not think so badly of labour charges for independents labour rates.

Is it drivable. i.e. are you using it at mo?

Either way you've got to get it off and assess the problem. I'd start putting requests out for a second hand or refurb'd jobby thru find-a-part etc., so you've got one lined up for a replacement when you find out it's Foobar'd. There's loads out there but you need the code off yours to make sure you get the right one, i.e. 'DBQ' was mine.

Ask the bloke at your garage to find it, then ask how much it'll cost JUST TO GET IT OFF and nothing else, then go and have a look at it yourself. Get a courtesy car while your on :)
