Stiff gears and no Reverse

I have a 1998 1.8t A3 and recently swapped the gearbox for a vw golf box which was identical.

The problem i have is now i have fitted the box everything went back together fine but the gearstick is extremely stiff and cannot get it in reverse whatsoever!

Any suggestions appreciated.

Did you check the gearbox before swapping it over, could have been knackered from the start.

The gearbox was working OK before hand it had just been lyin around for a while which i dont think should affect it.

When i move the selector by hand its selcting more than one gear but by the stick its only selecting one which i think is third.

Could be that the linkage needs re-aligning?

Anyone know how to re-align the linkage then?
