Strange "cluncking" noise coming from front

Please help me... this is drinf me mad.

When I am braking to a very slow speed, I hear a clucking noise coming from what seems to be the front left of the car. The same sound can be heard whilst pulling away slowly.

No noise is heard when travelling at speed or when cornering.

I have had new suspension (Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs) and new alloys fitted recently.

At first I thought that there may be a loose wheel nut, but no... they're all tight.

Any ideas guys... could it be to do with the suspension?

I had a similar problem on my old car, i replaced all the shock absorbers on it and after a while i began to get this knocking noise from the front O/S everytime i went over a bump.

Spent ages trying to find the problem.. Checked all the suspension joints etc.. In the end it turn out to be a faulty shock absorber, got a replacement under warranty. It was fine after that, bit of a pain though having to take it all apart again..

Could be your ARB front drop links have given up i.e. wearing before and then pushed to limit after the car was lowered..........I had this happen on my last car.

It was slow speeds and bumps that I heard mine........high speed no noticable noises

When they were replaced the noise went.

Usually one goes but the other will not be far behind!

I went to a garage at lunchtime and they reckon it's the driveshaft! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif

I have a feeling it's not going to be cheap!

Anyone had any experience with failed driveshafts?

Mate, i had this on my A3. Sorry for the essay, but i hope it helps :


Our car had developed a clunking noise, as you describe. When slowing down, you could hear it rather badly, it sounded like 1 clunk on every revolution of the wheel. Gradually, it got worse so we decided it was time to deal with it. We had the ARB checked, suspension checked, cv joints checked, all fine. So, we carried on and the noise also carried on. I took it to PTS in Luton, left it there for a week. They took the driveshaft off, was all fine and the diagnosis changed from driveshaft to gearbox /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif It was assumed the noise was something rattling around in the gearbox so they took it to their local specialist to strip and rebuild it. So, the car goes there for the work, the bloke drove it all the way down there and the noise was very vad. Parked it up, gave the gearbox specialist the keys and went back to PTS. He got a phone call later that day asking him 'what noise?' The gearbox specialist had taken it for a test drive and the noise had disappeared /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif So, for every day up until we picked it up, they test drove it for 20 miles and the noise never returned.

So, it may not be the driveshaft, it could be something in the gearbox, it may just disappear like ours.

This was probably of no help at all, but this is what happened to us. I hope you get it sorted cheaply mate as i ended up paying loads of labour and nothing came of it.

Oh, audi also checked it and said it was hard to diagnose but it could be the dogbone mount

I did change that a while ago. I have a look under tonight and re-tighten things.

i had this on my new shape TDI on gearbox number 1, gearbox number 2 fixed the knocking but was jumping out of 2nd gearbox 3 fixed all problems,but then the wiper motor got stuck them the ABS went then the wipers again so i got my S3 lets hope it's not the gearbox, go round and check all the suspension nut's are tight and give the wheel's a bang see if you get any noise

Got someone else to look at it last night and he is convinced it's the outer CV joint.

Booked into Audi on Friday for them to have a gander!

This may sound dull, but why have you fitted spacers to your car if not to clear bigger calipers? Does the wider track improve the handling? Does it make much difference?
If so what widths are recommended front and back, and where are they available from?

It looks better! The wheels fill the arches more!

I'm running 10mm front and 16mm rear. Spacers available from Forge Motorsport.
