Hi all,
At the back of the engine, on the plastic "shelf" just below the wipers, there is a small clear plastic window, about credit-card size, which I think covers a VIN plate that's riveted to the bodywork underneath.
My problem is that this little plastic window has dried out and cracked, so in cold and wet weather, water will be getting through to the area underneath.

Would people expect this to cause problems with rust on the bodywork?
Also, anyone know the best place to get a replacement "plastic window"? Vag-parts? If someone could tell me the part code from ETKA that'd be fantastic.

All the best,
B

Mine's is also like that!

The plastic window is part of the scuttle panel (black plastic trim as the bootom of the windscreen).

You'll have to replace the complete scuttle panel.

Really? That doesn't sound cheap - I think I'd rather seal over the plastic window somehow!

It's not as expensive as you'd think. I'd have to check my receipt, but IIRC it was only €30-45 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif If you can wait until tonight, I'll try to remember to check /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angel.gif

Thanks guys - if you can tell me cost (and part number if possible) then that'd be great. Is it an easy thing to fit or shall I ask my local audi specialist to do it for me at next service?

I think the part no' is: 8L2 819 415B 01C.
And the price: £31.20 inc VAT.
hope that helps.

That part number seems quite long - I thought they were normally shorter? E.g. "06A 145 710P" ?

And was this an easy thing to fit? I imagine I can do it myself unless it involves removing the wipers and a load of other stuff.
I guess a good place to order is vag-parts - is that where you guys got yours?
Many thanks,
B

Easy enough, the only pain in the **** item is the wiper arm removal as these things are lodged on quite tightly sometimes.

Part number is correct, but all you really need is the 8L2 819 415B part of the number as the 01C is the colour code, which in this case is satin black IIRC. It's around 35 Euro's on this side of the water.

If you want to order the part from VAG you will need the "01C" colour code, or it will come up on their system as an invalid number.
Richie.

Lovely, black would certainly be the one. I'll take a look over at the fixings later in this week when the rain has stopped!
Thanks very much guys.

The part will show up (Try ETKA) and advise them that it's available in colours giving the option of 01C as the colour option.

Dropped in on my local Audi specialist and he said he's never seen any problems caused by this and said I should be able to ignore it. As long as water won't sit underneath and cause rust then I'm not too worried.

I used to have a Citroen Xsara and it rusted where water sat near the rubber bonnet seal and the washer pipes broke the seal, but that was French of course, and I'd hope Audi's wouldn't rust with this kind of thing.
