Stiff brake pedal

Got a bit of weird problem, I've got in to start the car today and found that the footbrake wouldn't budge before I started the engine ...like it had been pumped without the engine running. Any ideas why this would happen? Its happened twice today.

to be honest as long as it softens up when you start the engine it's probably ok! Have you checked the brake fluid recently?

Yes it returns to normal after starting but its just a bit worrying.
Not checked brake fluid....ever!
