Help - loss of power

Hi all
Had my 2000 S3 for 3 years now and only use it to go back and fore work, a couple of miles a day. It's only done 32000 miles and touch wood have had no real problems to date. For the past week or so, its seem to be having problems in 2nd and 3rd gear, like a massive lag on the turbo and then it kicks in again, nearly got caught by a bus today pulling out of a junction because the lack of power.

I'm by no means an enthusiast like most of you on here and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the problem. I've read in other posts something about a MAF sensor. Could someone enlighten me on what that is and cost to replace if that was the problem.

Diverter Valve (very cheap) or Mass Air Flow meter (about 150).

air mass meters are availiable as an exhacnge price of £75 you may have to ask the question at the parts desjk as im under the impression they dont like selling them NOT MUCH PROFIT IN IT?

If the power loss is only in 2nd and 3rd gears its not the MAF. If you experience it all the time then it is probably the MAF. Simple to change, just a couple of screwa. If you can get the dealer to admit to an exchange unit for £75 you're a better man than me Gungadin. The dealer charged me over £300 to replace the unit and the local Audi "specialist" could not find a problem.

if they charged you 300 quid then it was a genuine part if you give me the engine code and chassis year then i ill get you the part number and then you can go there with some info and that will put the frightner up them, they will know your not a mug!!and charge you the actuall price of exchange prt £75.00 alternatively german sweedish and french do exchange units also £75.00

i would change the diverter valve first though, sounds like that to me.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm going to book it into my local audi dealer this week and see what they come up with. Foolish3, if you can get me the part number it would be great, engine code is APY (thats from the sticker in the front of the service book?). How much to replace the diverter valve???

Thanks both, depending on what the dealer says on Thursday, i might take you up on that Andy. Are they straight forward to fit, most i do to my cars is stick petrol in.

You will need three new jubilee clips ,because audi ones can't be reused,if you bring to me i will fit it on the weekend and have clips here.Cheers Andy
