Idle Rev Playing Up

I gave my S3 a bit of a thrashing in 2nd gear up to the red line...left it too late to change to 3rd. Now, when I leave the car in idle the needle is moving from about 900 revs up to 1000. It never stays still. In idle it seems to be ticking over smoothly, but ever now and again you can hear a light thud or stutter.

Any ideas what could be causing this needle movement?

I reset the throttle body using VAG-COM and it made no difference. There's no faults in VAG-COM. Even though the needle is moving so slightly, no changes in revs show up in VAG-COM at any stage when idle.

A week ago I got the throttle body cleaned, but I don't remember the needle playing up like this after I got it done.

my revs/needle pulses slightly on idle and my mates TT had the same.
