    Noob wanting to buy S3

Hi, new here, hope im not asking too much of a noob question.
have been offered an s3 on a 51 plate with 75k on the clock for Ł5800. firstly is this a good deal? secondly what problems do i need to look for with this age of s3? the other issue is i have seen there are two different power s3's how would i know whether this is the 207bhp or 225?
    Thanks in advance

    Jonny

That seems like a low price for the mileage, so if you don't know the person, make sure this is not a con... Check all the usual things on the car and listen for strange sounds when turning the steering wheel. Check car's history and make sure your double-check the mileage on old MOTs and service entries. It sounds a bit too good to be true, but with the current downward price trends in used cars, it's not surprising.

To find out the power of the original engine, look for the engine code, which is always stamped on a piece of the engine block near the cam-belt. Based on the registration of this car, I would probably say that this one is a 210bhp (APY or AMK engine). I prefer this one as it's much cheaper tax for what is essentially the same car and after remap, you will get the same power anyway.

Look at this thread for each engine's power rating: Definitive list of engine codes

cheers for the information. i do know the bloke. it seems ok. a few things do need doing tho.
It needs a new drivers door sensor i think as when you close the door the computer still shows it to be open and the light stays lit. any idea how much one would set me back. Also where would you go about getting a remap done on the car as if it is the 210 wouldnt mind doing this, and is it something you need to tell the insurers?

    many thanks for your responses

you should tell the insurers, but ive heard loads of points of views, they cant tell if its been remapped as all cars are mapped differently anyway, or a man from the insurance comes out and can check in a matter of minutes. its too much money foer the insurers to even bother checking. I persnoally am not going to tell them. but any other mods yes. i still need to tell them of my 007 and panel filter :O

Brilliant cheers will have a look into that then. Only other issue I've got is insurance spent pretty much all of yesterday ringing round companies with very few competitive prices. Are there any particualar companies anyone can recommend for young drivers? Cheers

Try telling them you do alot less miles a year. Sometimes helps!

Otherwise i'm afraid young driver and 200+bhp equals high premium. How old are you?

Don't let them spoil you having a decent car!!

Thanks for your help. I'm 21 so insurance is still on the 3k line. Got a quote of 2400 with admiral but rang them up and if I tried to pay monthly the premium went up to near 4000!! I don't know how they work that out! Rediculous add on simply for opting to pay monthly. I'm doing a massive call around to insurers today as I refuse to let my age prevent me from the car I want! insurance is such a joke when your young!

We've all been there mate, don't give up... Don't dismiss specialist insurers. I'm with Greenlight, who charge me 400 fully comp, with 4 years NCB, without a garage and living in NW London (Zone 3) and that's with all mods declared. Admittedly, I'm 28, but Admiral wanted to charge 900 for the same, without mods. Just shows you that many insurers just pluck a figure out of the sky and charge that.

This problem may not be as simple as you think! I had exactly the same door/light issues you describe above, and I had the door lock replaced as the sensor is part of the lock. (I think it cost about Ł100 including fitting).

The DIS now shows all doors closed but my internal light is still nackered and the problem is the electronical part of the central locking pump costing Ł300!!

Check to make sure that the alarm works fine on the car you're looking at. If it does then it will probably just be the door lock but if the alarm isn't arming then you may need a new pump.

Have you tried the likes of Adrian Flux, Brentacre, Greenlight (I think that's what they are called)?

Also, re-map it and don't inform them at your peril.
You get caught after an accident and not only will you have your policy cancelled and they won't pay out...but you'll not get insurance anywhere else either.

If you can't afford the insurance for a modified car...don't modify it.
    Just enjoy it standard.
You have to pay to play...at all ages. It's not pleasant...but better than the consequences of not informing them. If they suspect...they WILL find out, no matter how clever you think you've been.

After all, how would you feel if some uninsured (which is what you effectively become) tosser hits you in your new pride and joy?

Yep, Its a pain but it was the most affordable way of insuring the car! Ł250 xs on the car Ł250 xs on being 24 or under then my voluntary is Ł500 (I'm really not planning on crashing!) It's worth raeding the small print on all insurance polices as I thought at first I was only signing up to a Ł500 excess! but hey what can ya do! I'm going on the theory that I would pay a grand before claiming on my insrance anyway to protect my no claims.

I can recommend greenlight for young persons insurance. I just bought a '52 S3 and Im 22, 6 years NCB, 1 non fault claim (someone reversed into my car while parking...ggrrrr), no convictions, added my 65 year old dad to policy as a second driver which seems to help a lot. Limited milage to 6000

In terms of mods, that covers me for remap, cat back exhaust, filter, Uprated ARB's, suspension kit (Bilstein dampers with H&R springs). I think thats everything.

Oh, and the price is Ł880 FC for on street parking in the middle of cambridge with the mods. Admiral wanted about 1400 off me and Adrian Flux didnt even get close.
