Power Steering Pump

Hi guys, my car's been leaking steering fluid for a whole now and is making some strange noises as a result. So my mechanic figures it's the power steering pump. The thing is that Audi are asking an effing huge amount for the part. The mechanic says that he should be able to (retro)fit one from a golf or something - which will come to about half the price.
Just wanted to know if anyone on here has done that or anything similar - or which other cars would have a matching pump.

The pump part number for the AMK,BAM and AUL engines is different to the other 1.8T engines such as those fitted to the Golf range

Will have to see what I can do. I've heard that there are "generic" pumps on the market over here that might work. Will check them out. Hoping this is the last of my surprises for the year.
