    Agree Scott Audi have no consistency in their implementation of this warranty, hence this thread in the first place.

    Could you add your full details as per the rest of the posts mate?

    P.S. customer service unlikely to help out - it's the audi merry-go-round!

    I think it's more to do with dealer discretion, they are the ones who have to make a decision don't then? Do you think they take pictures and send them off to Audi HQ?

    No i think it's audi warranty. I and most others that i've read about on here have been told that the decision was in their hands, not the dealers. Birmingham Audi told me they had recommended the warranty work on the roof rails to Audi and sent pictures, but that it had been refused centrally.

    If it was down to dealers then the inconsistency would be more understandable, although of course we're not privy to the reports that the dealers send off to Audi.

    The other (calculated i believe) problem this presents is that Audi UK customer service will state that they cannot alter or impact on Audi Warranty decisions. The dealers will claim the same and so ultimately there is no form of redress or appeal whatsoever. Not a coincidence i think!

    How can 'The rusts been there too long' be a valid reason to decline the repair.

    Surely THE FACT THAT THE RUST IS THERE IS ENOUGH AUDI, WHICH PART OF THERE IS RUST ON A CAR THAT IS COVERED BY A WARRANTY DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND.....THE CAR HAS RUST ON IT...RUST!!!!!!!.

    Its madness!!!.

    Audi appoved the work at HB panelcraft Preston, they sprayed all the roof, the rear spoiler, and the passenger side rear quarter. Very good paintjob. Got the car back and the lumbar support doesnt work anymore. On my inspection, some wires at the rear of the seat are damaged so they are sorting that out in 2weeks time.

    All in all, well worth going to your local Audi if you have corrosion coming through the paint. Dont know how they can get away with saying ;the corrosion has been there too long!'.....unbelievable

    Hope this helps

    Just a word of warning, I've had my car back from Audi for two weeks and the lacquer that the Audi bodyshop has applied has already begun to peel off both sides of the rear quarter by the bumper.
    Im not happy, I will be going back to Audi this week for them to sort it out.

    OUTCOME (APPROVED, REFUSED) - Been told its likely to be refused, told to go back for second oppinion.

    REASON FOR REFUSAL - Small patch of lower rear quater has had a respray, even though the affected area is original paint. Apparently the complete panel must have original paint.

    Been back to the bodyshop today for my 'Second oppinion'. A different person took care of my claim, and seemed more helpful than my first visit.

    Took the usual paint guage test's and photo's, and was not bothered by the small respray area my car already has.

    I asked if they have had many of these claims,

    "Yes weve had a few of these, the majority of them have been approved, only very few have been rejected. If it is rejected then i should just call Audi UK and make an official complaint"

    So now i await the result (1 - 2 weeks).

    You should be able to get a good job done for 2-3 hundred but make sure you get brand new roof rail inserts from Audi as the old ones will not seal very well if you try to reuse them and you're back to square one.

    Audi S3 - Rusty roof

    DATE OF CLAIM - June 09

    Took car to Maindealer and then had to take it to Harwoods (Southampton) to take photos to send up to Audi UK. Didn't hear anything for a month and then on 10 July Harwoods called me to say it had been refused as it had been left too long. I immediately raised a case with Audi UK and got a reference number. Called Audi UK on 14 July and was told that the claim was rejected because it had been left too long. However the girl dealing with the claim said that they hadn't received the photos yet!! I was like 'How do you know that its been there too long then?' Silence! Hmmmm, Then she said 'all claims get rejected', is this actually Audi I'm dealing with?!? Waiting for them to receive said photos. I spotted it as early as could be expected, the person who took the photos at Harwoods also found minor bubbling on the other roof rail which I didn't spot, you had to literally run your finger over the affected area. Waiting to hear back from Audi UK, can't wait!

    Well my repairs strung out for over 1 month going back in 4 times due to being poorly repaired! initial repair was fine but they made a right mess of the laquaring pin holes everywhere giving the excuse ''its a 10 yr old car'' BUT the pin holes weren't there before... hence it went back 4 times and still wasn't perfect but i had had enough by this stage. But the real gob smack was that they stole 2 out my car which isn't much but its the principle. they did return it when i pointed it out but... its the pure cheek go in for repairs and have your car checked through probably and stuff nicked ....

    When i visited Camerons Audi i was told to go and speak to a bodyshop representative in the next door VW garage as they have a bodyshop department. He came and looked at the car, then he got the aftersales managed from Audi to come out and have a look. They took photos of the rust patches, numberplate, vin number etc. and just told me to give them a phone in a few days.
    When i phoned back the following week i was told by the Audi aftersales manager that Audi Milton Keynes had refused the repair on the basis the rust had been present for too long.

Found paper work from previous audi warranty claim! Still waiting for reply, cust service has been shocking, always chasing them.

    Just a little summary of results so far.

    33 members have posted here about their roof rail warranty claims. Of these;

    There are 22 S3 owners and 11 A3 owners.
    Year of car - 1998 (1), 1999 (7), 2001 (8), 2002 (8), 1 not specified.
    Site of corrosion - RR both sides (14), RR passenger side only (12), RR driver's side only (5), 2 not specified.
    15 approved for warranty work, 17 refused, 1 not specified.
    Of those refused 13 were justified as the rust being 'there too long' prior to claim, 2 because of previous repair / respray work, 1 as the warranty 'doesn't cover bubbling', and 1 not specified.

    Obviously it is likely that individuals who have had refusals are more likely to post in this thread so the proportion of refusals can't be taken at face value. However, it is clear that a substantial number of claims (most of these claims have been made recently) are being refused on this basis. I've also seen threads elsewhere relating to other VAG cars with similar issues and outcomes.

    I intend to leave it a couple more weeks for stragglers to add details here and then (1) contact the head of Audi UK with these details asking for a response and position (2) if that does not produce a satisfactory response format a complaint to trading standards and try to get some coverage of this issue via Watchdog.

    Thanks once again to all who have contributed here.

    Regards,

    B.

    I wonder about the relative success of individuals who complain to Audi UK. I got nowhere with them.

    Maybe collectively there's a better chance.

    I've had an 8L A3, and I'm now on my second 8L S3, all of which have suffered with this roof rust.

    My current S3 is the least noticable with only a little bit of bubbling, the other 2 were quite a bit worse.

    I'm very tempted to go to my local (Hatfield Audi) and bring this up with them, don't think I'll get very far with them as my previous dealings with them haven't exactly made me feel like a valued customer!

    However, I have heard that Audi will only warrent any claims only if the car has had nothing but main dealer servicing and at the correct intervals, can anyone clear this 'myth' up for me?? as my S3 has both main dealer and specialist servicing records.

    Had my claim refused as previously mentioned. My local Main Dealer called me after I contacted their warranty department (Southampton) said they thought the claim was valid and to go ahead and book and they'd take up with Audi UK - Gobsmacked!! Dropped my car off yesterday, only downside is I have to live with a Chevrolet Matiz for 7 - 10 days!! Good luck to everyone

    To add to your thread. Recently had a claim refused.

    YEAR AND VEHICLE MODEL - 2002 A3 1.8T

    DETAILS OF RUST FOUND - Drivers Roof Rail

    HOW LONG YOU HAD OWNED THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME - 12 months

    TIME TO WARRANTY CLAIM FROM FIRST NOTICING IT - 2 weeks

    DEALER APPROACHED - Tonbridge, Kent

    OUTCOME (APPROVED, REFUSED) - Refused

    REASON FOR REFUSAL - "The bubbling had been there too long and had started to perforate meaning they would find rust holes underneath"

    DATE OF CLAIM - July 09

    Was very surprised to have the claim rejected after the dealership had agreed it was a warranty issue and then phoned on our behalf to question the decision. Equally surprised that Audi suggested we contact the AA to get it looked at (do they trust the AA's opinion more than their own staff?!)

    I have just bought an S3, after polishing it noticed slight paint blisters on both roof rails, had a word with Audi uk, told me, to take it to Dealership first, basically told them, i was thinking of booking my car in for service, but untill this matter is resolved and a decision is made Approved/Refused , will determine, if i get my car serviced with Audi, i mean whats the point if they refuse.
    Clearly States in the manual 12 years warranty on body, how can they refuse, when i get time will take in and take it from there.

    I have just e-mailed Jeremy Hicks and Richard Starkey at Audi UK concerning this matter.

    I've copied the e-mail below. I will let everyone know as soon as i have a response.

    Dear Mr Hicks / Mr Starkey,

    Re: Audi 12 Year Anti-Corrosion Warranty

    I am writing on behalf of the members of Audi-Sport.net, which is the largest enthusiasts' website for owners of Audi vehicles. I myself have been a member of this website for the past 5 years. I would like to make a representation on behalf of many of the owners of 8L Audi A3s who frequent this site.

    I would like to bring to your attention an issue that myself and numerous other Audi owners are currently having with the implementation of the 12 year anti-corrosion warranty. My partner is the registered owner of an 8L Audi S3 (registered in July of 2000) and we recently noticed paint bubbling along the roof rails on both sides of our vehicle. Under the 12 year anti-corrosion warranty i presented this to a local dealer (Birmingham Audi) for correction of this defect. I was contacted several days later to be informed that they had been told by the cental Audi Warranty department that the "rust had been there too long" and that our warranty claim had therefore been refused. Naturally, i was surprised at this outcome as i had presented the claim as soon as the manufacturing defect was noticed, the vehicle was only 9 years old (and therefore well within the warranty period), the paint was only bubbling in small isolated areas, and there was no rust breaking through the paintwork. I HAD NOT neglected to present this and left it to rust further before doing so.

    As you may be aware, this is not an isolated incident. A large number of the owners of 8L A3s who frequent Audi-sport.net have experienced exactly the same rust issue, in exactly the same location i.e. along roof rails. These owners have also presented warranty claims with local dealers. Many have had the warranty work approved and remedial work carried out. However, a significant proportion of owners have, like myself, had warranty claims refused and been given the explanation that the "rust has been there too long". A couple of months ago i decided to collate the results of warranty claims for this issue amongst the members of Audi-sport.net. You will be able to view the results of this by going to the following web address Anti-corrosion warranty results - Please post here. To summarise the results of this - so far 34 owners of Audi 8L A3s who are members of Audi-sport.net have posted details of their warranty claims for rusting roof rails. Of these:

    22 are S3 owners and 12 are A3 owners;
    All of these cars are less than 12 years old and most are less than 10 years old - All are therefore within the 12 year anti-corrosion warranty period;
    All have signs of corrosion along the roof rails, in the same postion;
    15 have had these claims approved and remedial work to address the manufacturing defect carried out under warranty;
    18 have had claims refused; 1 is pending;
    Of the 18 refused 14 were justified on the basis that the rust has 'been there too long' as detailed above.

    Of course members of audi-sport.net who have had warranty claims refused are probably more likely to have posted details of their claims in this thread. We are not claiming that over 50% of submitted warranty claims are being rejected. However, a number of things are clear from this:

    (1) There is a manufacturing defect with the roof rails of 8L A3s. As well as the owners detailed above many other members of audi-sport and other enthusiast internet forums have experienced rust in exaclty the same position on 8L A3s. Anecdotally, members of audi-sport.net have also been told that audi approved body shops are well aware of this defect and have guidelines for remedying the fault. Of course we are unable to verify this. Most dealers also seem to be aware of this fault through discussion with them, indicating that many 8L A3 owners have made warranty claims for this very issue, not just members of audi-sport.net.

    (2) A significant number of owners have had warranty claims refused and been given the explanation that the "rust has been there too long". The vehicles in question are all covered by the Audi 12 year anti-corrosion warranty.

    (3) Most of the owners have presented their warranty claims as soon as they have noticed early signs of rusting from this manufacturing defect. This is not a case of neglect on the part of owners. Additionally, owners with seemingly similar signs of rusting (verifiable through photographs taken by owners at the time of claim submission) have not had consistent outcomes. Some have had remedial work approved, some have been refused.

    (4) Audi UK customer service are unable to bring a satisfactory resolution to this issue for individual claimants.

    On behalf of the members of audi-sport.net i would like to ask you to examine this issue and comment on the refusal of seemingly valid warranty claims. We are all Audi enthusiasts, and mostly value the experience of owning Audi vehicles. However, of course the continuing relationship between a manufacturer and a customer is dependent on aftercare post purchase and the honouring of terms (including warranty terms) under which vehicles are purchased. In most respects, Audi seem to achieve this and the customer experience is a good one BUT in this case many owners of audi vehicles are feeling let down, and are being put off the brand.

    I am continuing to collate details of warranty claims, including the personal details of those who have claimed. In the near future, if there is not a satisfactory resolution of this issue i on behalf of these owners intend to notify this matter to the relevant authorities (e.g. trading standards), and if necessary to the media.

    Of course before taking any further steps the members of audi-sport.net wanted to give Audi UK the opportunity to comment to us on this issue, and we hope to indicate how this breakdown in customer service will be rectified.

    Of course i would be happy to discuss this issue on behalf of the other owners concerned.

    With kind regards,

    I've just received an e-mail from Richard Starkey (customer care manager). He has promised to investigate the points raised and will then be in a position to respond fully. He has asked that we bear with him on this.

    HOME TOWN - Immingham

    YEAR AND VEHICLE MODEL - 2001 A3 1.9 SE Tdi

    DETAILS OF RUST FOUND - 20cm of bubbling towards rear of passenger roof rail, Bubbling on bootlid where lock is, rust on inside of drivers side front wing.

    TIME TO WARRANTY CLAIM FROM FIRST NOTICING IT - Straight away when seen and after reading this thread.

    HOW LONG YOU HAD OWNED THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME - 1 month

    DEALER APPROACHED - Grimsby Audi

    OUTCOME (APPROVED, REFUSED) - Refused

    REASON FOR REFUSAL - Told that piece on boot was trim not bodywork, the rust on the roof had been there too long, the front wing looked like it had been resprayed at some point previously, I didn't have a full stamped up service history for the car. He told me it wasn't even raising the paperwork to send to Audi UK as they'd tell me the same as he had.

    DATE OF CLAIM - 11 Aug 09

    I have approached my local sprayshop who have an awesome reputation to do the work and some other bits for me and they have quoted me 350 - 400 they previously did my wifes car so I know that their work is excellent plus they do a couple of Moto GP bikes, and used to do all HRC world superbikes.

    • 1999-V S3
    • Classic rusting at the bottom of the doors
    • Replaced both doors as rust had come all the way through and couldn't be repaired.
    • Work carried out earlier this year having owned the car for 7.5 years
    • Really can't grumble about the outcome here

    Again slightly late for your first letter but please add me to your list.

    HOME TOWN - Redhill, Surrey

    YEAR AND VEHICLE MODE - 2001 S3

    DETAILS OF RUST FOUND - Usual passenger side roof rail bubbling

    TIME TO WARRANTY CLAIM FROM FIRST NOTICING IT - 1 week

    HOW LONG YOU HAD OWNED THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME - 1 month

    DEALER APPROACHED - Crawley Audi

    OUTCOME (APPROVED, REFUSED) - Refused

    REASON FOR REFUSAL - "been there too long"

    DATE OF CLAIM - 11/08/09

    Disgusted at how they can claim the have a warranty that lasts for 12 years for rust corrosion to a vehicle and when your vehicle comes in with rust to the bodywork just turn the claim away. They shouldn't be allowed to do this.
    Especially those with the common roof rail corrosion issue. This is clearly a problem with the design of the car not owner care.
