    HG failure... need help :(

    What. A. Nightmare.

Travelled 200 miles to get a lovely A3 1.6 sport - bose stereo, rear parking sensors, digital climate control.... all the toys I will ever need. Just had a reconditioned gearbox, new pads and a new clutch put in and an hour into my motorway drive home..... blue smoke by the bucket load.

Pull over at around 6pm in Birmingham, AA man gets there at 9pm!! Then I eventually get home at 3am!! So tired and peed off.

Basically, there is air in the coolant system, water being discharged from exhaust and the expansion tank was pressurising leading the AA man (and myself) to believe it is suspected HG failure - on my first day of Audi ownership.

My (longwinded) question is two fold:

    1. What are my rights as a consumer?

    2. Can anyone recommend somewhere to do a HG change for reasonable money in the Luton area as I need it done urgently and for not a lot of money as I just blew my cash buying the damn car!

    Please help!!!

    Gutted for you mate!

Was it private or trade sale?

Trade - Possiblly some comeback especially if you have some sort of warranty. Contact the seller ASAP, before any work is done.

Private - Sold as seen & Buyer beware are the usual phrases. Not much chance unless the guy lied to you about the cause of the problem, but even then it almost certainly have to be via the small claims court.

VagTech are near Leighton Buzzard, and are recommended by many on here.

    Cheers,

    Well..

Just got off of the phone to the dealer I bought the car from and he tells me that if I get the car to him they will put it right for me for nothing.

Cant complain with that for customer service!

Does anyone have a trailer at all that would do a job for some beer tokens?

    Thanks

Excellent Result! Just shows there are a lot of good traders out there, not just dodgy ones.

Absolutely - they are really spot on. I expected bother from them but I didn't even have to ask for assistance, they just offered.

Note: Just found a man that will trailer it for me as well, and someone to give myself and the missus a lift to work - today is looking up!

Good thing you purchased it from a trader, they have to fix it to be fair, due to sale of good act or whatever it is.

You thinking of Caveat Vendor? The seller has to make sure that the item is fit for purpose.
If so it was superceeded by Caveat Emptor, onus on the buyer.

(I may have got those the wrong way round though in as far as what came first, trying to think back to A-Level economics!)

As a trader, he has to sort it for free, aswel as the fact that you have bought the car same day, and then gone tits up!! Hope it all goes well, try and make sure he puts a new timing belt kit on it, two birds with one stone and all that !!

I am very tempted to pay for the belt kit and then get him to fit it as he has to remove it all anyway.

Will be sad to see the car go down the road on a lowloader but I know it will be all sorted and fixed in a few days

The belt kit is not expensive, its the labour charge thats the killer.

Don't believe the trader is obliged to do the belt. HG is head gasket right? If not much extra labour, I suspect they will make you pay for the belt kit.

What age and mileage is the car?

Do you know when it last had the belt changed?

If never, and you can save the labour on the belt kit, that would be a massive bonus.

I will get the belt and tensioners done anyway - may as well.

What are the prices of the kit so I know the garage isn't ripping me off on part prices?

Timing belt kit is about 35 i think.

On the 1.8 it is a good idea to replace the water pump at the same time. Not sure if that's the case with the 1.6...

Yep the water pump change is quick and easy after removing the cambelt on the 1.6 aswell as the 1.8.

Just gone through all of the receipts, and there are many.... the cambelt was changed a coupla years back - as was the gearbox and clutch.

This car has been seemingly really well looked after!

Head has now been skimmed and pressure tested and scanned for cracks etc and all is ok - just have to wait for it to be rebuilt then I can collect her again!

Found out that she will be ready on Friday but will be collecting Saturday... they have popped in a new thermostat as well just to be on the safe side.

Moston car sales in Chester - absolutely spot on service, especially for a cheap used car.

Good, There seems to be alot better customer care at garage's with this whole "credit cruch" thing.
