Put the car into reverse and she jumped out nearly breaking my wrist, put her back in and she went in fine but when reversing (about 2m out of a space) there was a bang - on engaging 1st there was no drive, nor in 2nd.

Other gears work ok, but 1st and 2nd are non existant, occasionally you get some really nasty noises but no drive.

Is it catastropic failure, do i need a new gearbox, if so where can i get one?

(Its a 2003 '03' TDi 130 with 6 speed box)

My gearbox went last year. Although it wasn't quite how yours has. Mine was in gear and just made a knocking noise. Then there was a big puddle of gbox oil below the box. This was caused by a rivet which comes loose and damages the gears and casing causing no drive and hence the leak.

Is there any oil leaking? If not then I'd get it checked out by a VAG specialist before looking for a replacement. If however you do need a replacement, then scoure the net and your local breakers for a second hand or preferably a recon unit. I travelled to Dartford to get hold of a recon box. Hope for your sake its not a replacement...good luck mate

No sign of oil, and i cant get under there at the moment to look for holes.

oh dear, Thats going to make your search alot more complex. It may be better if you found someone who can recon your old box. Failing that look on EBAY for breakers(which im sure you did) also in the classified section on here. Good luck matey will keep my ears and eyes open for you

Cheers - i take it this isnt overly common in FWD 6 speed boxes then??

sounds like a syncro or lay shaft has lost the will to live, you might be able to get a transmission specialist to overhaul it i had my golf mk2 box done over for about 250... a tranny specialist would be my first call...

Can anyone recommend one in the south west (devon) area.

This is Common and it is all down to the VW ****** gearboxes. Garentee if you pop it open you will see a ruddy great whole that more than likely will not be able to be reconed. Best trying to look for reconed gearbox! I would offer you mine as i just blew my engine and gearbox fine but i am still not sure whether i want to repair it yet or not! but sorry to be the bearer of bad new but it seems to me that you are definitly going to have to source another gearbox! It will have put a whole in the bell housing!

sounds like a syncro get it checked before you get a new one..

Asked a local specialist and was quoted a small fortune so i think i will do it myself.

Does anyone know where the gearbox number is as i canna see it from the top, or are they all the same for 130bhp 6 speed boxes??

Alright there smo, my S3 gearbox went recently and I was amazed at how much was out there. I used "Parts-Locator" or "find-a-part" (.com or .co.uk ?), put in my details etc and literally within minutes the phone was ringing! I got a second hand box for £300 from a scrappie in Blackburn but had offers of £350, £500 and even about £550 for a reconned unit. Way better than the £2800 ex VAT Audi quoted :haha: (for a new one of course:)

Not sure for yours but I got told mine needed a special tool to open it up but that the local Audi dealer didn't even have it :wtf: You WILL need that number tho cos getting into what boxes might and might not work with your engine is a whole other can of worms! Especially if you need the car back quick (ish).

Hope this helps mate :) Keep me posted.

I did one of the parts locators earlier, got 8 replies all wanting over £500 for a salvage box (not even a recon box)...

Managed to find one on ebay though and got it for £175, my only problem is getting it home to devon from wales!! :D

Good stuff mate, hope that works out for you:) It's a 6 speed so you'll need another pair of hands but it isn't a problem, unless you're massive and can easily lift and manouvre 70-80kgs of course:)
