    Have i blown my turbo?

Hi, my car seems to be running in limp mode, the turbo doesn't seem to be working, theres smoke coming out of the exhaust and from the back of the engine bay when i rev it with the bonnet open. Theres a metal against metal noise when I'm driving, maybe turbo blades inside turbo? Cars on 98k and on its first turbo. Theres no error on dash and no obvious lose pipes that i can see. I will admit when it went i was reving it rather hard.

    Any ideas guys?

    Thanks

    Allan

    Where is Kent are you?

Drop the intake pipe off before the manifold and rev the engine, you'll soon know if the turbo is gone or not

Sounds to me as if your turbo has indeed shat out its innards. The noise you describe is it like a dentist drill?

Not really dentist drill, but def like something rattling away inside something metal. But only when reving not when driving along slowly. I dont have the engine cover on atm, the pipe your talking a4quattro, is it attached to the air filter as well as turbo? The one that sometimes collapses under pressure?

yeah thats the best pipe to take off as then you will be able to see the turbo fin's with out the engine running as the last thing you want to do is keep running th engine incase it swallows some of your knackered turbo.

Could be worse, I'm a Chelsea supporter.... 3-1!

The pipe i was suggesting taking off is the turbo charge pipe not the vacuum pipe. Take a pic of your engine and I'll draw an arrow where it is.

Take the blue samco in the bottom right off, where it meets the manifold, rev the car and you'll feel a huge whoosh of air coming out of it if the turbo is still functioning.

    Flying objects? Like what?

Personally i'd rather see any flying objects come out then go into the engine and totally screw it.

flying odjects like broken turbo, id rather not see flying objects or run the risk of ruining my engine by running an engine with a posible failed turbo, thats why id remove the tip and check the turbo at the turbo with out even having to run the engine risking damage

Very very unlikely anything would make it as far as the intake manifold anyway, as the intercooler would stop it. Normally the turbine fins might end up out the tailpipe but the chances of him getting hit by anything from the charge pipe are virtually nil.

Jonesy, bring your car round mine and I'l have a look at it for you. I'm near bluewater.

i wouldnt move the car if you suspect turbo failure, you can still get small parts of turbine blade pass through the intercooler plus the amount of oil that can pass through will carry large amounts of metallic dust through the intercooler and can score the bores!
just take a pipe off from the turbo so you can stick a hand or finger in( engine switched off, keys in your pocket!!!) and try and turn the turbines, if not turn or scraping sound its fooked!

Hi guys, i haven't got round to looking at the car yet as been a very busy weekend and been using my mums car to get around. I'm off work tomorrow so will have a look hopefully gonna check all pipes and inside the turbo. I suspect the headgasket is going as well as there was gunk in the cap and dipstick area. Strange tho as i had a new head fitted last year!!!

Anyway thanks for offering to look at it A4Quattro if i have any trouble ill contact you. I may be able to source a turbo for 250. Quick question how hard are they to fit? Also the products that claim to fill cracks in the headgasket would you recommend them?

    Thanks

sht happens pal, objective of the game is how you react to the ****, e.g, negatively or positively e.g. i crashed my car into a roundabout 1 month ago (brake failure). airbag burnt 40% skin off one hand, gf dumped me been commuting on the train to work.....etc. but on the brighter side! Insurance company paid me off on the car, more than i paid for it! And im about to join the S3 club!

AND torres might score a hatrick tonight!

    please?

A4quattro i took of that hose on the bottom right and all it does is suck in air when rev'd? I also removed the top right hose which is connected to the air filter but there was no sucking at all from there. Ive checked all the hoses and none are loose or have come off. Its still producing loads of blackish/white smoke when rev'd and theres still a horrible rattling noise from turbo area.

Oh and theres oil everywhere near where you can fit the gearbox short shift thing plus some on the underneath of the hose on the bottom left, is that a bad sign lol. Plus my dipstick no matter how many times i clean it will come back out with yellow gunk on it!

    I'm screwed ain't I?!

ok just got back from garage. They managed to get the pipe off the turbo and the blades are there but they said the bearing is gone and theres more movement than there should be so the blades are rubbing. Theres defiantly water getting into the oil but could this really be the headgasket when i had it done about a year and a half ago!

Also the noise i hear whilst driving badly sounds like a loose exhaust heatshield, but the garage reckon its the turbo, but i think its something else.

Anyone know what type of turbo i need to replace mine with. I know its a k04 but there seems to be different types and prices range from 200-600 wtf!!

My cars a amk 210bhp 2001 if that helps

i doubt that the head gasket has failed again its rare for the head gaskets to fail in the first place, i think its more then likely from where the gasket was changed before its easy to get water into the oil when fitting a new head gasket as there are oil and water ways next to one another.
also i expect it to be more a case of condensation build up, id flush out both the radiator and engine and start again with fresh coolant and fresh oil and see how it goes from there on.
did you have the head replaced when the head gasket was replaced previously and also why was the head gasket replaced before???

Hi when my head went before it ended up costing about 1500 from a Audi/VW specialist, cant even remember what they changed but was in garage for weeks! Thinking about it i have all the symptoms of a headgasket failure again. Non stop white smoke out the exhaust (but could be turbo), it overheated a few months back whilst in traffic. Mayo under cap and dipstick. What else should i look for?

    I honestly give up.....

umm over heating smoke if not the turbo and your mayo does sound more like head gasket failure, take the coolant expansion tank cap off when its cold to see if it is still under pressure its not garentted to still be under pressure but if it is it looks very much like head gasket or craked head but as i said its not always still under pressure still, have you noticed coolant loss or oil loss??? id reckomed you take it to a garage though for some proper test before shelling out 's getting it fixed

Jonesy, not sure what garage you've been to, but since you are in Dartford, you could contact Dean or Adam from 4rings. They are based in Dartford and mobile. They know their stuff and will give you better advice after looking at the problems.

    http://www.4rings.co.uk/

I've used them before and can't fault them at all.
    ^^ In my opinion

just read your posts above, when the headgasket was done, maybe it wasn't done properly e.g skimming the head/block, not tightened to correct torque settings etc...

Smell the coolant, if it smells of exhaust then its headgasket.

Don't forget the turbo is cooled by water, and also lubricated by oil. If the internals of the turbo are cracked then they could be mixing in there.

The head might be a red herring, get the turbo checked/changed first.

The suction should come from the metal manifold, the whoosh/pressure should come from the hose itself.

There will be no pressure there, its before the turbo.

Sounds like the shaft has snapped in the turbo.

Could be because of the turbo shaft breaking or a waterway/oilway in the turbo being compromised.

sounds good to me then mate, no doubt there will be ways of checking how good they are or refurb costs, with 63k on i cant see it being badly.... wait for someone with a tad more knowledge before you commit

The best way to tell without fitting it it have a bloody good look.
All inside the compressor housings and oilways and check for anything untoward, and spin the shaft and check for any lateral movement in it.
