The guy told me its genuine but also said he would only offer the 3 month warranty if i fitted new fuel or oil lines to the turbo as this is a main reason for them failing? Not too sure in the truth there but the pipe is 40 so may do that as well.

Also spoke to a recon company http://www.midlandturbo.com/index.html they seem pretty decent, will pick the turbo up and deliver it and if it is just the bearing will cost 185 to repair. But knowing my luck its probably unrepairable!

I go with the Midland Turbo route. They not too far from me and heard some good reports. They obviously know their turbos and can give you an idea if its repairable or a price for an exchange unit.

Having read all the above it def sounds like turbo and nothing else.

Make sure you warm up and cool down Turbo each time you run the car when you get the next one fitted.

    Good luck

Could be worse though....My M3 threw a conrod out requiring new engine. Warranty ran out so had to fork out for it myself...5500!!! Think yourself lucky!

anyone know what type of k04 turbo the s3 uses? Theres different types like k04-01 and k04-15 etc. I was about to buy one but dont want to get the wrong one!

Spoke to a guy and he said that theres only one type of k04 that will fit my engine 'AMK' without causing damage!

    Thanks

Ive ordered a k04 turbo from an Audi s3 03 model, i hope it fits straight on. Have a feeling it may be a 225 where my old one was a 210. will this fit ok?

Also where can i get a oil feed pipe and gasket from?

    TY

Hey, went to Audi today the oil feed pipe was 89 so left it as im sure i can get it cheaper elsewhere. Bought a turbo gasket and a new oil filter. Ive removed quite a few parts of the car, charge pipe, air filter and intake pipe and emptied oil. Gonna do rest Sunday 'EXCITING' lol

Just to update you all, i attempted and failed on Sunday lol. That turbo is impossible to get to. The diy guide i had for a 1.8T golf was of no use at all. Anyway as i did most of the work already, its gone to a local garage and they are only charging 100 to change turbo. Result, probably end up costing a bit more as i didn't buy any oil plus Ive asked him to change oil feed pipe and my rear wheel bearing. Cant wait to get it back and working again. The auto Pug 206 is cramping my style!

Hey everyone, I know its been ages just thought id let you all know what happened to my car. It was in a garage for 2 weeks! They say they had problems removing the turbo then when it was on it was blowing somewhere so they had to remove it again, but 2 weeks is absolutely ridiculous!!! Eventually got it back today and they charged me 400!! So not happy!

They showed me the old turbo and it was damaged beyond repair, cracks everywhere and the blades and bearings inside had shattered! They showed me the old oil feed pipe also and it was blocked full of ****, lucky i had that changed otherwise the new turbo wouldn't have lasted too long atall!

have one last problem to sort, the grinding/rubbing noise on full lock, Ive been doing my research and it seems the haldex oil may need topping up, we shall see!

Anyways lesson learnt look after your car, warm it up and down otherwise it will cost ya!

glad ya got it sorted jonesy....

i know your not supposed to rag turbo cars before tuning off, i do understand though that the S3 has a 2nd fan and water pump to try and reduce the temps.... ? wouldnt this do the job to an extent?

Letting the turbo cool down is definately a good idea, but the afterrun water pump should be enough, otherwise the Audi manual would say something about it I'm sure; it says to start the car with the clutch down to reduce the wear on the starter motor.

I guess the most important thing is having decent oil changed reguarly to make sure it keeps the turbo cool and lubricated when running and doesn't block the oil feed lines.
I do make sure I've not been using full boost for a while before stopping though, makes sense to let it cool down as much as possible before stopping.

In all turbo cars they say to warm up and cool down. In imprezas of old there was a little sticker stating this!!

Glad you got it sorted and indeed it was the Turbo. So how much has the whole thing cost (turbo and fitting) in the end?

yeah i know turbo cars are meant to be warmed up and cooled down, but i KNOW the S3 was fitted with parts to reduce the need for this
