I'm thinking about replacing my tyres.

Currently I have 225/45/17, mounted on the factory Avus rims.

i'd love to get something a bit wider, and options are 235/45/17 or 245/40/17

both the options are about 1% larger, so the speedo accuracy isnt an issue.

however, I was wondering:

1/ will the wider tyres fit the rims without problems,
2/ would larger sizes cause any rubbing issues inside and/or outside,
3/ any problems with drivetrain/haldex etc.

Any opinions or experiences out there?

the S3 is slightly over rubbered as std so going wider may spoil the handling slightly. other than than you should be ok

Have you priced up those sizes? 225/45/17 is quite a popular size on a lot of cars so demand is quite high and prices are lower; those other two aren't so you may find that they are a lot more expensive.

yeah looked at pricing. In Oz, the 225/45/17 is not so popular and is actually more expensive than the others.

we must have a slightly different market to yours.

I also looked at www.tirerack.com to get comparitive pricing for say the goodyear F1 asymmetrics and there was only a US$20 spread across all 3, so I'm not really fussed about that

I run 225/40 on my 18x8. 235 might be a little wide on 7.5" wide wheels?

If you do go large though you might want to consider a thiner side wall. 235/40? 235/45 side wall will be larger than the side wall of the 225/45.
