at the moment my cars has longlife 5 - 30 in it. i was going to top it up but all i have in the garage is Quantum synta Gold Fully Synthetic 5 - 40.

will i be ok mixing the two together?

Are you keeping it on variable servicing?

I run mine on Synta Gold or Halfords equivalent - but change it every 5000 miles.
