    Head gasket wear in time?

    Hi all as you may have read my car has been well and truly muntered by a broken cam belt.. now my question is whats the wear in time for the head after work on the engine...im going to assume that you cant drive it like you stole it straight away (not that i do just too illustrate [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]) .

    No running in period for a head gasket.

    But you have not "just" had a new head gasket you have had new valves possibly valve seats also maybe a new tensioner also, so perhaps you should take it easy for a while [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

    Officially no run in period for those parts either, but yeah don't drive like a nutter for a few miles. :-)

    As HTC says no run in required. Run in is for surface hardening of cylinder bores and most other components need no run in whatsoever.

    A guy I know who blew a head gasket in his Punto GT was told to keep the car below 3000 rpm for about 500 miles!

    If I were you, I would be taking it easy for a while just in case!

    The headgasket should be tri-metallic (read indestructable). The Pnto one was probably styrofoam [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif[/img]

    I'd personally run it in for the sake of valve guides etc.

    If this was a new head I'd agree with you, only for the fact of allowing the valve seats to bed in correctly once running, but other than that there really is no need.
