New S3 owner.......HELP!!!

Hi guys

Well i've just treated myself to a faclift model s3in silver, it's got 19's, blistein suspension, remus exhaust, induction kit and remapped.

Car is lovely but there is already a problem, when i'm turning at low speeds there is a grinding noise and it feels like it vibrates underneath the car. doesn't do it all the time though. Also i've noticed that the steering feels quite heavy and when you turn it feels like you have to turn the wheel back yourself

Now i've done a quick search and i'm thinking this could be steering rack

Am i right?

If so how much is a steering rack and how much should i be looking for labour?

Have you checked the Power steering fluid level? Can cause a horrible noise if it's a bit low?

have a look at your wheels on the inside if their is any gunk then CV's could be the prob.
as for pricing it depends where you go as a stealer will fleece you

Just checked the power sterring fluid and it's very low, i will get some top up oil 2moro and see if it solves the problem.

Paul make sure you get the proper one from Audi, its only about £6, but its supposed to be the only one to use on the car.

Not worth skimping on this as its cheap enough anyway.

Let us know how you get on...

BTW, seen this car up for sale a while go, like the stance on it, looks really good.
 
Ok, topped up the power steering with audi top up and suprise suprise................the noise is still there, lol. How did i know it wouldn't be that easy.

Ok, let me try to explain the noise a bit more, the noise sounds like a grinding rubbing noise but it actually seems to vibrate from the front of the car right to the back, you can actually fell it vibrate under you.

Now this only happens when i a am turning out of junctions etc, not if i'm going around a corner whilst driving?

Does anyone know of any good VAG specialists in the south wales area?

I've not got a clue what it is and i dont fancy taking it to the stealers to sort
 
could this be a caliper sticking on? if its only when your going pretty slow?
 
to be honest with you, i haven't got a clue, think i'm gonna have to get it looked at by the specialist.

forgive me if this has been mentioned already, but could it be something as simple as the wheels rubbing on full lock?

My 18's rub inside the arches on full lock, so I'm SURE those big 19's will rub a little on full lock....
 
Could be what Prawn said, do you know anyone with a standard set of rims that you could swap with and test??
 
Ok then guys, time for an update.

This noise is really do me and my mates head in now.

Took the car to audi in swansea and got a mechanic to take it for a test drive, he then plugged it intop the machine to check the haldex system and no fault codes showed, after about 20 minutes he said i know what the problem is, it's you wheels on the rear rubbing when you turn..............WHAT A LOAD OF ******!!!!!

Firstly, the car is on coilovers and the suspension is rock hard, secondly there is plenty of room in the arches as thats the first thing i checked when i got the car.

Now, another reason i know it's not that is that i've recently found out that when the car is cold, say, on start up, i can turn full lock both ways and there will be no noise but as soon as the car is say run for 5 minutes that dreaded noise comes back. Other thing is some times even when warm it might not do it, but when it does, it doesn't half vibrate under the car.

I was wondering if maybe the oil in the haldex system could be something to do with it?

What i dont understand is why when the car is cold does it not do it? the weather has been really cold the last few days and i've actually noticed that it's got a little better, i'm totally lost?

If it was the Haldex, it would be coming from the rear, and if its a grinding you can hear, thats not the haldex, it would be the rear diff shafted!

Have you had the gearbox oil checked? Taking a long shot but perhaps turning corners, if your gearbox oil is low and its shifting to one side, could cause a bit of friction on the gears, might explain why its not so bad in the cold, the oil would be a lot more viscous maybe not shifting as much! Just a stab in the dark, but wouldnt cost anything to check it!
 
theres a bolt on the back of the steering rack to tighten it up and avoid play in the steering. its could be too tight and may explain why you say the steerings tight and you almost have to turn the wheel back to central. probably not the cause of the vibrations/noise though
 
Ok then guys, update in on this problem, i've taken it to a very good vag specialist near me and they have diagnosed the problem as a fuk'd rear diff

Can anyone recommend a breakers that i can get one second hand from?
