What benefit would you get by knowing how many miles you get out of a whole tank?

well for me it means you get a quick glance of roughly how far you can drive before filling up. Without working out how much fuel you have and then working out roughly how many miles you can do on that. I use mine all the time.

The most accurate way to do this is fill the tank to the 1st click and reset trip counter and the next time you put fuel in, fill it again to the 1st click. note the miles and do the maths.

well I did run my s3 to the redline & still got between 30-50 miles out of it, they always allow extra past the line anyway, I would get a petrol can, stick some in, then fill up & run until empty, then work out the mpg based on 55litre tank, of course some wouldnt recommend run until dry but never caused an issue for me, just stop as soon as stutters & stick can in, but your choice but that is the only 100% definite way of knowing what a full tank will do with your driving style. even if you have a DIS on the speedo with info as its not that accurate, good but not best

This is definatly the way to do it.

I rememeber once ran out of pertol in my old polo. Student style. I had to push the car 10 yards to the pump as it wouldnt go any more. i always fill up well before now.

Ive read that it can be a big problem on diesels if you let it go empty. maybe something to do with air in the system. Ive also read that it can be dangerous to brim a diesel too. Not sure how much truth this is to modern motors tho.

    i get that too.
i asked my mate who is an audi tech, he said there is roughly 8 litres left, of a gallon n arf!
but that was on an a3 turbo, plus it depends how u drive it!
with no computer, and the light coming on, personally i would refuel after about 30 miles, as 30 mpg....so u know where u stand....

or be a smart ass, take a jerry can, reset the counter when the light comes on and just keep going till you stop!

My picture of a yellow refill pump always comes on when there is 30 miles remaining. Generally I fill up before this so I don't know if it would actually give 30 miles after the light comes on.

Oh and the constant beep every time you turn on forces you to the petrol pump :-)

nooo Cornish... as soon as i picked the thing up i filled it up.... infact 30-35 goes in weekly whether i need it or not, most times i have some left so it collects for my bigger journey's- otherwise its when the light comes on, hate it when you bin driving on the light for few days then wack petrol in, ends up costing shed loads more lol

    really?

nearly everyone i have spoken to do not recommend it due to the dregs having more crap in.

Especially i have read that its really bad for a diesel and the engine has to be de-aerated

I remember running out of petrol on my Mark 2 Golf Gti a few years ago, and then when i filled it up, it ran spluttery for a good few miles, when i asked my mechanic, his simple answer was "its all the **** at the bottom of the tank that has been picked up and is running through the system"

So i would say its not a very good idea to let it run (however if you think about it logically, wouldnt that get picked up everytime you fill up????)
