    small miss fire

    Hi everyone and happy christmass. I have an 01 s3 and at 3000rev in 6th gear the car has a miss fire for about 2sec and then pulls again. I had the car serviced aprox 1000miles ago and changed plugs , air filter , oil filter and oil. Theres no faults coming up, any idea where to start lookin, Thanks for your help lads.

    DV valve. or coil pack?
    Turbo Sport, Auto (I know!), A lot of 's -and rising [latest add: Recon'd. tranny] sunk in her since Aug. 07...

    If it feels like the car is holding back on power, it could be a faulty MAF(Air flow) sensor. Best way to check for this is to drive the car with it disconnected, it's directly after the airbox in the Engine bay, disconnect it and go for a drive, it will be running less power, but see if it revs cleanly upto say 5k revs with it disconnected, remember to connect it back up afterwoods. Alternatively, if you have acces to VagCom, then do a diagnostic check to see if any fault codes show up.

    i'd try the coil packs as this hapend to mine just a month ago. turned out it was the coil pack on cylinder 3

    Yeah this happened at the weekend to me after coming home from my xmas party, the car hesitated and the EML light came on, driving at low revs the light went out but kept flicking on and off and the car would not run right. I pulled over and the car was idling very lumpily so i popped the engine and the smell was awful I checked to see if any of the coil packs had popped up but nothing, so limped home. Stuck it in VAGCOM and it said cylinder 3 misfired, luckily I have a couple of spare coil packs so managed to get it changed. You need to undo the 5 x 5mm Allen Bolts and 2 x 10mm bolts on top (remove the N249 valve to gain access) - I also had to undo the hoses connected to the pipe to get access to a couple of the allen bolts. Once done I had a quick look at the plugs - you need a 16mm Socket to get them out - and all was fine. Replaced coil pack 3 and all was good. You do need VAG to see which cylinder had the misfire other wise you will be swapping over one at a time to see which one is the fecked one. Good luck

    Not sure about the miss fire but the symptom of a loss of power when boost is at max is usually a MAF. Try disconnecting and going for a run like jojo suggested and see if you get the same problem then connect back.

    Someone else might want to answer the following point as I don’t know the ins and outs, once disconnected and reconnected the ESP light seems to come on and will go off after the ignition is switched on then off. I have heard that you need to clear fault codes for the mapping to come back into alignment but again I’m not sure.

    I don’t think it is a coil pack as that would give you a rough idle and the car not very drivable – usually.
