how to tell if your TIP is collapsing

I have a problem which appeared this morning on the way to work.

The car drives normally until i hit about 4000RPM then the boost seems to be very lacking and the normal *kick* i get wasnt there.

No lag or cutting out or hesitation just no power.
And it hasnt happened before now either.

The only thing that has changed is that when i went to fill up at my usualshell station the other night it was closed so i went to esso and put 97RON in instead, it has run for 3 or 4 days on it without any problems.

    Car is a 2001 S3

    Cheers
    James

I think as a precaution anyway alot of S3 owners have changed to the forge version as I did, guessing only way to test is on a dyno or car in air then check it.

Just been out for a quick spin to test it again and it drone absolutely fine.

I wasn't able to get it into 4th gear to have exactly the same conditions as this morning but i am fairly surew it was doing it in all gears this morning as well.

Does this point to it going into limp mode ? and if so what might cause it to do that ?

well if you think about it if the vacumm has caused the pipe to collapse then of course its restricted on air so would make the power drop considerably, you wouldnt do yourself any harm in changing it anyway mate as stock is ****e, but go direct to Forge themselves as they helped me out alot.

If you're taking all gears upto & past 4krpm then yeah would be noticeable in all.

I think i've heard somewhere before that the pipe's on the face lift models was reinforced compared to the pre face lift's, so don't know whether this would be the problem as yours is a 2001.....have you ran vag.com to see if it brings up any fault codes ??

Nah the pre-facelift had reinforcement aswell but didnt help it much, I remember from mine, also the actual original replacement was brought out on the facelift version before they did a pre-facelift one as I had to do some mods of pipes with forge's help to get my 99 to fit as the pipes were in different locations to an 01 car.

.....hhhmmmmm !! seems i may have been mislead, i was sure the pipes were more sturdy on the face lifts....think i heard that at Jabba. Somebody did post a video up actually showing their tip collapsing under pressure.....not good !!

    vag com gave me
17705 - Pressure Drop between Turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!)

after i had cleared the fault i took a quick trip down to my local garage, he had a quick poke around in the engine bay and found one pipe that was completely screwed he is gonna order it tomorrow for me, the pipe in question leads to a round plastic (valve ?) about 1 1/2" diameter on the right hand side of the engine bay just underneath the plastic engine cover, what is this part ?

Sounds like the n75 valve mate which could give you that fault code if it wasnt working correctly

just been outside to have a look at it.
The diverter valve i have justs potted sitting behind the air box housing at the back of the engine bay, this thing is slight larger than the DV and the top is flat and it sits in front of the airbox housing > engine pipe
also has one pipe in one pipe out and one of them is really soft now

mechanic thinks it might be a breather valve ?

also how do i tell which DV i have, i have heard that changing it to the newer type gives smoother engine response.

sounds like the thing you are on about is the engine breather valve,it has a pipe that comes from the righthand side of the rocker cover under the plastic engine cover which then go's into the round plastic breather which then fits into the big turbo intake pipe, just replaced mine with some silicone hose,

It will fit the 210 with some pipe mods, I have those mods still I think, you have to extend some & stretch some others, but it will fit as I did this for my 99 APY S3 with a forge 01 onwards version, worked 100%

as for which DV well is it black as thats oem bosch audi version, change it to a forge DV with side pipe fixing which I had & worked very well, please post image of the other part you are talking about so I can determine what it is as I cant remember from my S3 fella

what i meant about the DV i have readon here that the new OEM DVs have a stronger spring than the older ones and improve driveability of the car.

Happened again this morning, after about 5 minutes i realised when i went to overtake someone.
So I turned ignition off and back on again and car was then fine, no engine management light coming on though (and it does definitly work)

So is this possibly some valve sticking somewhere because of the cold weather ?

Have a look at this thread: S3 BAM - ESP/Oil Breather Pipes

I ordered the part you were after as I needed to change it as well as the hoses around it as a few had split. I too had the 17705 error, and once changed the hoses the error went

Well I dont know what part it is as no image yet, but faults could be the N75 mentioned as this has been known to cause issues.

    Hi,

    Is your S3 remapped... ?

If this scenario is only happening in quite cold temps/first run of the day, & you find the 17705 DTC popping up, cycle ignition & power is back.. its unlikely to be a HW issue.

    Cheers
    Morgan

    P.S
Intake hose collapse is very noticable when it occurs, & is not similar to what you describe.

i realise now it is not the TIP collapsing.

I have had a CC remap on the car now for about 2 or 3 months, and this is the first sign of any problems.

The part i was asking about is the engine breather valve and we have just replaced the pipe from the valve to the air intake as it was knackered (no leaks or splits just really really soft)

This fault so far has happened yesterday morning and today.

Even though the car has been parked up all day at work for 8 hours it drove fine when i came to it tonight and it has been very verey cold where i work.

We also checked the DV as the fault code suggests to but that seems fine as well.

How would i check for a sticking N75 and how would if it weer sticking would i need a new one or can it be free'ed up again ?

    Cheers
    James

    Hi James,

I do not think your symptoms have anything to do with an N75 issue.

    If this scenario applies

    Cold temps < ~5deg
    First cold start
    Accelerate = lack of boost
    17705 DTC popping up
Cycle ignition & power is back as it should be
At all other times vehicle runs just fine

Indicates this is not hardware related.

    Cheers

I would say that is a fair description of the issue.

What is the problem and what is the cure ?
