Dashboard cluster

hi there wondered if anyone can help,
got a A3 1998 1.8T two weeks ago and not sure why but the dashboard cluster is now not on when driving. it comes up with the 'OK' and if i press the left button it will run through all the tests (oil, water, mph etc.)

Any ideas?????

Press the button on the underside of the wash/wipe control stick?
