    100k plus S3's

Im thinking of getting another s3 but a lower budget one this time with high mileage. What is the general opinion on the high mileage s3's? I know audi's are strong had a quattro s2 s3 and s4 in the past many of them going well into 100k miles but im not sure on the s3 as i sold mine at 90k miles. What things should i look out for turbos, gearbox etc?

Hi i have a s3 and its over 100k and going strong ,

Its great and you just have to make sure the car has had a clutch change or get one done . Service and history . Mine was well looked after and i was not bothered about miles as i didnt want to spend loads more for a lower mileage one . now mapped and pushing alot of bhp its a great car .If you look after it i could do double that anyway !

i know they are good for high miles if they are looked after as said
best to look for one with plenty of history and old mots to back up the mileage and regular oil changes and low owners if possible
if you get one with high owners, you know everyones had a bit of fun and its been abused
just look out for normal stuff as you would on other cars such as gearbox,turbo,clutch,engine/gearbox mounts, steering rack,suspension,wisbones/bushes,head gasket, brakes, air con (compressor),whole exhaust inc cat,oil/water leaks, warning lights, overheating, electrics etc

    Thumbs up High miles

High miles don't mean the car has been abused ,

Mine had done motorway miles and for its age its low and it mint for the work that has been done and all fixed by audi saves me doing it ....

high miles isnt a problem as long as it has history
i said if its had a high number of owners its more than likely been abused.(not high miles)
i would always steer clear of cars (sports cars)with alot of previous owners.
what normally happens is they drive them like they stole them for a year or so and then sell them

With the credit crunch the price of sports cars are rock bottom. I have just rejoined Audi 'S'- ownership with a 02 plate, 55k, 2 owner for 6.5k. Not a good time to sell for those looking but a great time to buy.

The problem is i got rock bottom price for the sports car i sold, nearly 2k less than i would have 6 months ago. So all things equal themselves out!!

What ever mileage your looking at, abusive owners is the factor not miles on the clock. Just 1 minute with the current owner will tell you if you intend taking on the the misery of a thrashed un-cared for car.

I don't think mileage is the issue but I'd suggest you need to spend money on these cars if you pick one up that has not been cherished - may be replacing the groaning suspension of cam belt change or replacing the naff tyres the previous owner put on - there is a big difference imo between the cheap ones on the internet and the ones that have had proper money spent on them -after all they are all getting on a bit...

I've had mine from new. (July 2001), and just crossed the 100k barrier. (I missed seeing the milometer tick over by about 10 miles.. damn)

Thought I'd give a brief list of all the stuff that's gone wrong in those 100K miles:

1: Xeons pointing to the ground (too low) when driving. 4 visits to Audi later after changing the lights, and the motors, discovered that the sensor on the rear suspension was faulty. (Warranty)

2: Synchromesh faulty on 3rd gear. Gerabox replaced under warranty.

3: Strange whirring diff noise: Haldex diff replaced under warranty.

4: Of course, all coil packs replaced. First one on failure, then remaining 3 replaced at next service.

5: Broken Clutch Pedal. (Audi defect, but they made me pay for a new pedal).

    6: MAF needed replacing.

7: Rear wiper motor needed replacing.

8: Faulty Engine speed sensor causing hard start. (multiple visits to audi to fix.....)

9: Clicking noise inside dashboard, fixed by wd40ing the connections on the indicator stalk.

Other than that... It's been great, FSH, normal cunsumables like brake pads and discs, changed the Cam belt and tensioner at 70K and put new shocks and springs at 90K as they were getting a bit tired.

Is the above par for the course? Or have I been unlucky? (My work commute is about 20 miles of nice tight twisty country roads, so I do make it work pretty hard.)

    Lightbulb long list

    Thats a long list ,

i suppose it depends whats been done before . But they are strong cars and these things can go wrong .I wont ever go near audi as i think they are such a rip off and i know many garages that do a better job ..

Only stayed at Audi while it was a Company car and under warranty. Once it became mine, I try to do all the diagnosis myself, and then take it to my local to get things done. Not particularly happy with them at the moment. Anyone recommend a good VAG place around Reading?

Good list mramcha. this highlights that it's usually not the engine that fails with these cars, but supporting components.

Yea i have a big smile as well. Strait car, no damage. I looked a 3 S3's all local all 02-52 plate car from people who had had them since nearly new and just wanted to shift on. I still know of a 52 plate silver 52 on clock for 7k in Colchester.

bought mine 5 months ago with 97,957 miles on the clock since then ive done over 10k with no real problems . think my maf is on its way out but thats it. just looked through the history all main stealer .
    its had
    1 coil pack at 65k
    fuel pump at 66k
    cambelt at 73k

a couple of sensors by the looks of things . other than servicing i don't think its to bad.

its been chipped but seems to have been well looked after .

i'm starting to worry that i'm heading for some expensive problems in the future !

    128K x reg (remapped at 88K)
had it since 44K and 4 plus years
since owning had to have brake master cylinder and usual (MAF, DVs, temp sensor)
previous owner had faulty airbag sensor replaced by audi.

Can't fault it yet (touch wood).

    Hi Milage

I've got an 03 S3 and in 2 years i've gone from 60'000 to 110'00 and had no real problems new clutch and a few minor things(coil packs, thermostat) but running strong. I use it for work every day.

Im on exactly 100,000 and engine/clutch/gearbox absolutely fine.

Has had suspension work (seems to be a weak link), all shocks, springs, most of the bushes and a whishbone.

Apart from that - going strong !

    Enjoy.

Mines a 2000 W on 124k now. The previous owner had it remapped around 90k and then the turbo went on me at 110k, very gradually though as the bearing gave up.

Not cheap to get a recon unit fitted and I'm still finding odd oil deposits where they shouldn't be.

Otherwise it's been fine save for the usual coil packs, thermostat etc.

The shocks are definately tired now though so tmay have to get them done soon.
