Strange clicking sound from the rear?

Hi Chaps, First post so be gentle!! Had my 2000' S3 for 4 months now and love it to bits but yesterday with the ignition turned on I heard a strange clicking sound coming from the rear. I believe it to be near the fuel tank so am thinking could it be the fuel pump on the way out? Or some related relay/solenoid as when the ignition is off there is no noise!? Any help on the matter would be fantastic! Cheers chaps!! Ali
