OK, MOT time again, and also the best time to sell...

What are peoples thoughts on the worth of:

October 2002 (52) S3 Audi S3 Quattro 1.8T 225PS, 1 previous owner, ex-audi approved used car. 45k miles, Nogaro Blue. UK car - Personal Import with the following factory fitted options:

Silver leather heated electric recaro's
BOSE sound system
Navi+ sat nav
Sunroof
Aluminium mirrors
Multifunction steering wheel
Rear parking sensors
Auto-dipping rear-view mirror
6-disc CD changer (disconnected for Dension icelink)

Plus all the base specifications.

Aftermarket Dension iPod interface fitted, otherwise totally standard.

Full Audi service history. Alarm siren replaced 2 years ago. Cambelt, tensioners and water-pump changed at 37k miles. All other interval services completed according to schedule (i.e. aircon, haldex, brake fluid).

bad bits are scuffed corners to the bumpers and blistering of paintwork on number plate handle. Also wheels have chipped paint around the rims.

i would probaby reckon your looking around anywhere between 10-11.5k region..

Think you'll be lucky to get 10k at the moment. BMW have been offering me £7k as a part ex. alright mine hasn't got the same spec and is 2002 with 59k but it gives you a rough idea.

AKY - according to Glass's guide it should be 6.7k poor, 7.5k avg and 8.3k excellent condition.
Traders will always try and get a car as cheap as possible - did you ask BMW how they arrived at that figure - is the car your looking at cheap or nearly/new?

Madvw - it's got to be 10.5k - 11k, when i bought my 51 plate six months back (bad timing eh) for 10k your example would have been about 12 I reckon..

Yeah coz last month they offered me 8k which i'm sort of thinking I should have bit their hand off with. The guy had rung a few of his contacts and that was the bid they were getting. He said possibly £7.2 at the tops. WTF!!! I'm now thinking of keeping hold of it and buying the JBS005 kit for it (sorry for hijacking thread).
MadVW - might be worth keeping hold of for 3-6 months

I'd have thought BMW are a bid enough company to offer Glass's guide price straight off if your buying a lot more expensive car through them..

Having said that you would not want to be a car trader at the moment with loads of sports (thirsty) cars sitting on the Lot - I reckon loads will be struggling big time already.

Madvw - What you thinking of buying in it's place if you don't mind me asking.

A 5 door a3 2.0 diesel dsg sportback! Then maybe save for an ariel atom, depending on priorities and responsibilities.

I dont get to drive the S3 enough to warrant keeping it, and I've never have had the balls to track it and afford binning it. I'd rather have a sofa as a daily again, and get something loony fast and enjoyable that I can track at Snetterton.

£10k is about what I was expecting from a private, and £7k from a trade in.

Noooooooo chance mate, would be nice if it was but id put it up for £10,500 and be prepared to take £10k for it.

They seem to be loosing money rather quickly now which is one of the reasons i got rid of mine!

Just got this from an online Glass's guide. Add a grand to these prices for private sale and adjust a little dependant on spec.

Audi S3 quattro
1.8 Petrol 3-door Hatchback
6 Speed Manual Four Wheel Drive
Year: 2002 52
Mileage: 45,000

Part-exchange Price:
Excellent condition:
£9050

Average condition:
£8120

Below average condition:
£7220

I'd say 10.5k - 11k but as been said I think its a case of waiting for the right buyer.

Had mine up for about 10 days now (not long I know) but haven't had a single bit of interest, all ways sold my old cars within days of putting them up for sale :(

Anyone had any recent luck with the autotrader? considering splashing the £50 to put it in there :ermm:

Absolutely nothing from the trader. Put in for 2 weeks net only to see what interest I'd have. Sweet FA to sum it up

Think i'll give that a miss then, seems to be no way to shift a car at the minute, need to free up some cash rather quickly and having an S3 to run doesn't help !

think its just a bad time to try and sell as no one wants to buy.

Its not just that there hard to sell, id buy a S3 in a heartbeat. Its just hard to get a loan for a reasonable APR at the minute. The banks seem to be taking the **** a bit at the moment.

AKY, your best bet is put it to standard and sell the bits...not just saying that coz i want most of the bits on it ;) but bmw aint gunna give you sh*t for the modded parts and would probably give you the same minus the mods!!!

Madvw, Id hold on to it for a while, the way things are looking is pretty bleak to say the least on the whole selling front.... Stick it on pistonheads at 10.5k and see what interest you get???

Yeah I realise that but for what it would cost to put back to standard I wouldn't really get it back. I've been meaning to ring you Scott about that and if it doesn't sell in next couple of weeks I'm sure we could strike up a deal. the exhaust and lowering kit would look good on your motor!!

Id still try sell it private mate with the mods!!! autotrader is one place ive never tried as it costs money and every one i no whos used it can never sell out!! lol. have you tried ebay?? stick it on with no reserve and ill bid on it to bump the bids up :)

okies most traders actually buy cars 'in' using CAP guide which is an auction book.... so typically even less money..... secondly, you won't find many cars fetching glasses guide prices (book price) unless you owned one of the first Mini's or something that has an equally low depreciation/waiting list

I think 10k would be very lucky, even private, im welcomed to being proven wrong im just thinking more along the lines of 9kish.... see what they are going for on autotrader and price couple hundred below...note the cars that are selling though...anyone can price their car high, doesnt mean it will sell

agreed, have a look at pistonheads and the cars that have sold are the ones on reasonable money. There are a few that have been hanging around for ages - in my mind it means they are kidding themselves on the price.

As for hanging onto a car - they never go up in value do they? I'd advertise at the lowest you'd take, minimal margin, and then stick to the price.

9k for a nog blue 02 with 45k on the clock with the major service done and those options on private sale is too cheap IMHO, the only things that really go against it are the look of the MFSW to some :)p), it's an import and it's got some scuffing. If it were me i'd have the rims refurbed for £200ish, polish out as much as possible any imperfections and give it a clean.

I keep reading that heavily optioned, mint condition S3's are becoming harder and harder to find so to the right buyer it's worth £10k. Despite running costs and fuel prices they are still desirable cars. If you need to shift it quickly then take less, if not hold out for a month or so, it won't devalue by a grand in that amount of time!

thanks for the comments, they've been useful. The mixed views in here mirror my own views too. I 100% realise that a car is only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it, and finding the perfect buyer is as hard as finding the perfect car - but its still a nice spec car too.

In reality I need to see how much a dealer would offer I guess. Thats always my preferred option really. If its only £2k under what I could sell privately for, then its getting chopped in. I hate selling cars privately.

And this is all If I decide to replace it anyway! At least I've gone off the idea of a DSG anyway...

1 thing, most dealers won't appreciate the car for what it is and unless they consult an Audi specialist, will still probably under value you as they will be scared to commit to the unknown....remember when i bought mine, went to Carcrap to view one id seen advetised just so i could see the double DIN stereo layout.... sales turnip didnt know what an S3 was!

Madvw - why don't you find a car, get a part-x value then post on this forum and Pistonheads a price £750 quid more and detail it's based on a part-ex value + £750 and any private sale would need to go through within 5 days.....easy way to potentially get an additional few quid..gotta be worth holding off on the new car for a week I'd have thought.

..and £9k private is way too low imo

IMHO I think this is indicative of why some people are struggling to sell their S3's... It's just a car (even though most of us agree it's a great one), it has a current value, the current value is listed in various price guides, people don't pay more than the price guides.

Easiest and least stressful way I have found to sell cars is to list at a fair price, as researched from cars that have actually sold (why not ring a few and ask what it sold for), and price guides - Glasses, Parkers etc. That way you get punters to call and then come look at it. In my experience once someone has made the effort to come and see that car, if it is clean and well looked after, it is easy to make a sale - just stand back and leave them to it. When they haggle, simply (and pleasantly) ask them if they think it is overpriced. Generally they will concede the price is good (it must be - they made the effort to come see it) and you will not have to drop it by more than a few quid.

Overprice the car from the start and you get no calls and get fraustrated and annoyed.

Hope you don't mind me chipping in.

S3's and other limited edition cars always bring more than book price!! i paid £6500 for my old s3 and sold it for 8!!! youve just got to be in the right place at the right time ;)

I hear you, just I've never seen it myself!

Maybe the important bit of the whole picture is to make sure you get a bargin in the first place, because that reduces the hit you take when you move it on - sounds like you do the same.

I just bought a 52 plate 330d tourer - paid 6,600 when it booked at 8,600 - That's right place at right time!

I've got mine up for £6600 which IMO is a very good price for the car your getting, can't seem to get any interest in it though :sadlike:

Interesting thread.

I paid 12k for mine just as the "credit crunch" hit. 03 plate, 19500 miles, serviced the day before I picked it up, new discs and pads all round, years mot and 8 months tax. Not a mark on the car, absolutely mint plus a long list of extras.

I think it was very much worth the money at the time. I was looking at S3's on 60k miles for 8k which were a million miles away from how mint mine is.

I think its worth as much as someones willing to pay. The S3 is an enthusiasts car and people do still very much want them!

How about wait for a while to see these financial issues clear up. SORN?

I paid less than 13k for my 41k miler 53 plate with the same spec at the original poster's apart from I have no sat nav and I have black leather. That was in December 2006!!

I think realistically now, the original poster's car is worth about 9k tops in the private market. I agree, the best thing is find the sort of car you want to buy and if it is a dealer car, get them to give you a proper formal quote on px and cost to change.
Then get a "cash price" for your new purchase, this will tell you really what the dealer is offering you on yours. That is the bottom line then, so advertise it properly with a realistic price about a grand more ONO and see if a private guy bites. BUt be careful, private sales are a lot of hassle and if you cannot get about £750 more privately, I would trade the thing in tbh, just lots less grief!

I think you should maybe wait until September and see if this axxhole gvt of ours gets rid of this stupid road tax crap that they have planned. if so, you may find the market for hot hatches picks up a bit, but dont leave it too long, even sat on the drive not trning a wheel, your car is depreciating by about £150- 200 a month!

Good luck with it, it looks like a nice spec car.

the cars wont go up in value when the credit crunch goes....it will merely slow down the devalue.....all saying the tax on the car changes aswell!!
