I have a 2001 A3 1.8t with 36,500 miles which I bought a few weeks ago. I have noticed that there is a vibration through the steering wheel when I lift off the accelerator when above 80 mph.

At first I thought it was wheel balancing, but would that not cause vibrations when accelerating as well as decelerating?

I am now starting to think that it is something to do with the engine as when I lift off at 80 I get the vibration through the wheel and can feel it through the car as well and it also kind of sounds like the engine is gurgling - weird I know, but it is the only way I can describe it!

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing it?

Check your engine mounts as one coould have failed.

I think Gambba had this problem too once

Thanks Mike, I will get the engine mounts checked out.

Its definately not the wheel balancing as I had that done this morning and it has made no difference.

I don't think it will be the engine mounts/engine related as the vibration is still there if I put the clutch in - maybe gearbox mounts??
