S3 remap REVO dilemma

I've had a bad day.

Browsing my local newspaper this morning an advert for a Audi specialist firm caught my attention. I had a drive over to see them, just for a chat, get some idea of prices etc etc. They’re REVO btw.

After the initial chat, some prices on remaps, turbos, suspension setups, brakes etc the car was hooked up to VAGCOM to check if there were any faults. Having flagged several things, these were addressed but also he noted the terrible condition of the carbon build up in the oil. I admit, I hadn’t checked.. Well, not as far as taking off hoses etc. (I’ve only had car 4 weeks) It’s all very well having a full Audi Service History, but the oil was disgusting.. ANYWAY..

Okay, so I take him for a blast, asks me to floor it from quite low in the revs to near redline in 3rd. He noticed one of the readings were quite high on his laptop, thought no more at this stage. Got it back and switched from VACOM to the REVO software.. It turns out, my car already has a Stage 1 REVO remap!! I thought he was kidding with me, “you’re kidding! Surely not!!?” but no, he was right. It had been mapped in a previous life. Gutted.

There’s me hyping my new car up and how I’ve heard “it’s not a real S3 until it’s been remapped!” Imagine my disappointment, (yes, I’m £500 in pocket, but nevertheless) I thought my car had so much more to give, I was quite excited about the extra 50/60bhp, I was eager to have a trip out in a remapped version to see the ‘massive’ difference. Especially with REVO too, as it’s supposed to be quite punchy/aggressive, isn’t it?

So yeah, my car has been fiddled with already. It also has a Bayley Dumpvalve that I too knew nothing about. Ah lord.

The chap went round the engine, getting into the breather pipes, cleaning all he could to rid of the nasty carbon build up. He wants me back to get into the sump to completely flush the block. This I guess is a must.

Any who, I’ve spent just over £200 today, I only went out there for a brief chat! We went out for another run after the pipes were flushed with VAGCOM attached, it was boosting too high and the timing was out, he knocked the boost down and adjusted a few more settings and yes, it did feel slightly more ‘crisp’. Either way though, I’m quite annoyed. To see the gains I was expecting from a remap now, I’ll have to consider a bigger turbo etc

After a quick ‘rough’ calculation, he worked out it’s pushing out some 251bhp. I thought REVO’s take it to at least 260, 265bhp?

What I need to do now is find a standard S3 to run along side me. And/or run a Revo mapped against mine to see how it compares.

So yeah, gutted.

Thanks for the replies.. I had a word with Vorhees on the phone earlier, top bloke!

I don't know, I knew the S3 was 'fast' as standard, which, my model (210..) is pretty quick, yeah.. but after finding out it's already been mapped, I was wounded.

When I return the vehicle for the engine to be flushed etc, he's too check for a small air-leak with-in the intake pipes.. loosing a bit of boost from this apparently so this might change things a tad - we'll have to wait and see.

I am actually meeting with vorhees on Saturday as it turns out I am up that way anyway! Will let him have a drive and see what he thinks.

I have found out I'm 20-30 bhp down on what voorhees is at....bearing in mind we are the same set-up (mine's quite a bit cleaner though)

I reckon your cleaning products had a hand in it like Tim with his scotch egg

hmmmm....this is my experience of the REVO thing...

I bought my S3 as standard...liked the performance...otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. I had no intention of doing anything to it....but then I discovered the forum!

I thought I would get the REVO trial, and noticed the difference immediately, and as soon as the trial ended, I parted with £500 to have it on all the time.

What I should have done, was to get it on the rolling road first before it was mapped, and then after it was mapped.

At the rolling road day, today, I have found out I'm 20-30 bhp down on what voorhees is at....bearing in mind we are the same set-up (mine's quite a bit cleaner though), so I will have to get this sorted....BUT....I still love the drive and feel of it with the REVO, and do not regret getting it.

Once you get it set-up correctly, if you want a bit more grunt, take a look at the backdraft hybrid turbo, or something similar

Dave, did you get your car RR on the same RR as Voorhees? If not then I wouldn't worry about it as its not a fair test.

Ermm yes it was the very same one,true rollers as well as I've had it RR'ed a month ago and same figures then.
Had it done just after Christmas at a different place and they said 280 bhp and 316 lb/ft

93,000 miles. It WAS disgusting if I am honest. It's being booked in sooner rather than later to have it all flushed.

Last nights meet with S3IZZO confirmed that the S3 is indeed, Revo'd. A big thanks for Jordan for sparing his time to meet me, cheers.

He flushed my ECU, said "okay, that's 'standard', try that!" and oh my, it was embarrasing. It didn't feel any quicker than my 1.8T Sport!! You can see why so many people opt for the Remap. If I'd of driven an S3, standard, I think I would have been dissapointed.

Although the remap isn't ultra-fast, its certainly a MUST modification to make to YOUR S3.

So if you're reading this umming and arr'ing about one, the answer is simple, do it. You have too.

personally i would recomend the revo. love the punch. understand it may feel faster but why not have that punch that makes your car feel nice n fast?

No problem, in fairness to the S3 it may not have felt any quicker than your previous car but then you've been driving it around Revo'd for the past 4 weeks.

To me your car seemed to pull fairly strong for stage 1, probably give mine a run for it's money.

jimmy, the map will only bring up issues with weaker parts, ie coil packs etc.... once you have changed these (they will go eventually anyway), then your fine with the map.... clutch etc only takes a hammering if your launching at high revs etc....so the theory goes that your car will be just as reliable

currently 235 mate, but i have a problem that im trying to sort....you get better mpg too when off boost....only slight but every lil counts

took me 2 months to make the decision, drove a members car and made my decision within 300yds....totally different car and even though everyone mentioned the grin factor.....no matter how much warning you get or how you resist.....you cant wipe the grin off ya face

When you got low power on a RR, did they only have one fan blasting air into the front of the car (in the middle) ? I had this at a none VAG specialist RR place and got about 230BHP. I've been told since (by a very knowledgable guy who works for as REVO competitor) that it's normal to be ~30bhp down if they don't use 2 fans (one each side) to get cold air over the intercoolers (which are side mounted on the engine). He rated the REVO map highly...

I've got a REVO map and have had odd power delivery issues (it seems a bit hit and miss).. A new MAF helped, as did new coilpacks... It started feeling odd again recently and this time the fuel pump started making a funny noise and fell apart when it was removed... So I'm hoping that the new pump is the last part holding it back from where it should be.. (Annoyingly the new pump was DOA and the car's had to be taken to Audi themselves as they have to fit the new pump or pay the VAG specialist that I'm using this time for the labour.)

Blun, Voorhees got 250 from his Revo, it was a single fan, however this was raised with the guys doing the session and they said that more than 1 fan was not nessesary due to the rollers not being the load baring type.....

I should probably add that after the RR session with only one fan my car went into limp mode (the turbo was turned off completely by the ECU) and Fontain (who I took it to afterwards to get it checked as they had mapped it with Revo) reported that all the map settings were all wrong afterwards, they were a bit baffled as the car going into limp mode shouldn't really do this...

It had to be reflashed to remedy it.

What i was trying to say about the fans is that it's nothing to do with the rollers... More than one garage have told me about the 2 fans (one at each side) now, get the air flow wrong (i.e. not keeping the intercoolers cool) totally messes up any result you'll get.
