    Converting from 5 speed to 6 speed?

    Hi,

    My car has been in the garage for the last month or so with a variety of issues. One of which is a clicking noise and the garage have replaced EVERYTHING, all suspension, bushes, joints, steering rack etc but got an answerphone message last night saying it's still there.

    He's away till next week now but mentioned he wanted to look at the 'Gearbox diff' or something along those lines.

    My question is, if I required a new gearbox, how easy would it be for me to upgrade to a 6 speed? I'm guessing i'd need a new remap and source a 6 speed gearbox but can you think of anything else? It's prob not possible and i'm not too bothered but would be nice not to rev at 4k when doing 80mph as do lots of motorway miles.

    er why would you need a new remap.....? Remap does not affect gearbox!

    I would not bother, the 5 speed is a far nicer gearbox for the road, 6 speed box has too short a 2nd and 3rd gear, 4th is shorter than the 5speed 4th, 5th on a 6 speed is like 4th on a 5 speed and 6th is the same as 5th pretty much.

    Stick with the 5 speed, it is a lot of hassle for mediocre benefits if any and I find I am coonstantly changing gear on the 6 speed where you dont have to on a 5 speed.

    Cheers. I change gears at about 3k (use LPG and don't like booting it). Do you know what revs you get at 80mph in 6th? FOr some reason I think mine are too high and would be my only benefit. Agree with the other ratios not being as good as have heard others say that too.

    i use 3 gears on my 6 speed - 2nd, 4th + 6th

    if you want to rev under 4k, cruiseat 70mph...

    what's that clicking noise? from where does it come from?

    The clicking noise has cost me about 1500 so far and we still don't know what it is. Happens when doing full lock and going forward. Clicks once. When go backwards, clicks again. No one knows what it is. It's with a specialist who'll hopefully find it though. You can feel it through the wheel and it's audible outside

    Just as I was happy I have a 5 speed, the garage phoned to say they're replacing the gearbox and have sourced a newer 6 speed one! So it's become 6 speed. Should be good as I don't rev at all but if I was always redlining then the smaller ratio's may annoy me. Cheers for the advice guys.

    clicking on full lock is normally the CV joints on the driveshafts.... i can't believe you've spent so much on this and now your happy for them to change the gearbox.... if it was the gearbox you would hear the noise all the time reguardless of full lock or not... it looks to me like this garage your using saw you coming and are just taking the piss... can you tell me what the total bill will be once they have done this gearbox change ?? are they doing the clutch for you at the same time ?? probably not but i bet they charge you for one anyway ... care to name and shame them ?? then at least other members won't be parted with their hard earned cash as easily as you are.... sorry if that sounds harsh but hell you've spent 1500 already and now they are on about a gearbox change... i would say your looking at a final bill near 3000... whats the car worth ???

    My local garage changed the suspension from coilovers to springs and shocks inc top mounts. Then replaced the ARB bushes and links. Then replaced the driveshafts.

    The new garage have changed the master clutch cylinder (clutch pedal broke), haldex system and rear diff (this died on me), steering rack and the noise is still there. They've disconnected the ARB, changed CV Joints and every other part of the suspension you can imagine. The noise is still there so they're going to change gearbox (only last thing they can think off) and do clutch at same time.

    The new garage is Midland VW who have a very good reputation. He's always been upfront with me and has told me each stage and is only going to charge for parts for most of it and they've had car on their ramp for last month. Just been there as they've given me a hire car and can see them working on it.

    Problem is, if I knew from the outset what a big issue this is, I would not have bothered. But after spending so much at other place and then getting stuff done here, I have to get rid of the clicking. I'm not happy about spending so much and have to take a loan for it but in a catch 22 situation as couldn't afford to sell the car cause spent so much on it in the past.

    When it's all fixed, i'm not changing the car for a very long time! The money I saved in Audi respraying most of it (roof and door corrosion) i've spent on clicking issue!

    I appreciate the post and in hindsight wouldn't have bothered trying to get it fixed in the first place.
