4 Spark Plugs & 4 Coil Packs Later...Car Still Stuttering

Car was running fine except the odd jerk in the idle also noticed the smoke out the tail pipe looked a bit cloudy but don't think its a head gasket problem that wouldn't cause jerking... 5 miles later the car started jerking/misfiring again, sounded like the cogs in the gear box were all out of sync and it kept clanking...not to sure how to explain it.

Cant believe this is happening after spending 120 on the coils and 50 on spark plugs.

Need a vag com desperately. My mates cousin works for a VAG specialist and he said he will help on on Saturday to diagnose the problem. Looks like i wont be able to drive my car up to GTi International this weekend.

I think i've almost ready everything single thread on ASN on coil packs sparks and misfiring but cant seem to work out what is up with mine.

Anything else i can add to this check list?

    • Spark Plugs - Changed these twise
    • Coil Packs - Changed these also
    • MAF - disconnected this problem still there
    • TIP (top right near air box)- Squeezed this seems to be soft but not soft as the big pipe thats located on the bottom left hand side.
    • Checked for split corroded wires/pipes (could there be any underneath that i am missing?)
Anything else i might have missed out guys?

sorry for the long winded story.

    thanks

    T

Not sure if it will be much help but i had a missfire problem on my 1.8ts,

took it to my local vag specialist and it turned out to be the ignition control module, iirc about 150 fitted.

Hopefully you'll get it sorted soon.

If I was you I would take it to a local specialist mate, probably cheaper in the long run to diagnose the problem.

You might as well do a throttle body alingment. Disconnect the battery for 10mins, reset via VAGCOM (ideally the preffered method but as I see you can't) or open door turn on ignition wait a few clicks turn off and then start her up.

Had a similar issue with my BAM engine. Anyways whereabouts are you based? Also any lights come up?

Oh and just to add you might as well clean the TB first and then do the TBA.

This is my thread on the TB issue I had

You have to get VAG-COM or similar on it. It might be something like a bad crankshaft sensor or cam position sensor.

Interesting that the fault disappears after messing with things. Heat related? How are the wires around the coil packs? I've seen these crack in the past. Any hissing from the engine bay like a big air leak?

May be fueling, but again you'd need to read error codes. Lambda issue should allow the car to run albeit down on power.

I might try doing the TBA and the TB how long will this take?

My engine gets really hot is all s3's like this?

Wires round the coil packs are fine. No hissing at all.

Need to wait till Saturday to get her checked out on my mates computer...might need to drive down there hope i dont cause any more problems.

With respect mate, stop pissing about and get it down a garage. I've lost track of how many people have already advised you to do this but you still insist on driving it around and splashing out money on possible fixes. Get it plugged into VAG-Com and find out the error codes. That should tell you EXACTLY what is up and you can then purchase the parts required or get it booked into a garage.

Cleaning the TB is an hour job, 5 mins taking it off, 25 cleaning it and 25 to let it dry and 5 to put back on.

    1. Remove lower boost hose and push to one side
    2. Unclip the connector underneath the TB
    3. Unclip the hose on top
    4. The TB is held on by 4 bolts (2 on top, 2 underneath), these can be taken off using a 5mm Allen Key
    5. Remove TB and be careful not to rip the paper gasket.
    6. Holding it with the electrics above, spray in carb cleaner and wipe clean it out
    7. Be gentle opening the butterfly valve and clean around using cotton buds
    8. On drying one good tip is to get some newspaper and cut it into strips and feed it through the gaps beteween the valve and the housing as this is where the most fluid gets caught.
    9. Let it dry thoroughly and put the TB back on
    10. Do the TBA
    11. Cross your fingers and start her up!

BTW you can't do a TBA until all DTC's are cleared from the system so either way you need to VAG-COM it....

When following jester's advice on doing removing and cleaning the TB, DO NOT try and move the butterfly valve. It is held in position by a stepper motor and moving the valve may damage the motor. The only time it's ok to move the valve is if you have the older non-DBW engine which has a throttle cable.

I think you should have a real careful look at your coilpack and injector wiring. it could be a chaffed wire shorting to earth, or even a broken wiring plug. Get some electrical contact cleaner and clean all the plug terminals. See if ith the motor runnign you can wiggle some wires and get ti to misfire??
Also, see if you can see which cylinders have the problem, using the plug out method you used before, see which plug is cool or wet if you can.

Did you use original audi vag coilpacks and MAF?? some of the GSF ones etc are rubbish (a "search" will confrim this!! !!)

Get it to a local dealer, even VW, I find if you speak nicely to the parts guy you have been getitng all your coilpacks stuff from (hopefully genuine) then he will probly have a quick work and get a tech to bop it onto their diagnostic, it takes about 5 mins and if you have spent fair wedge, they will do it for free! ! !!

I used brand new coil packs and spark plugs from audi main dealers. Ill give the injector wiring a clean.

the problem is the car is running like a tractor now when switched on, do not want to leave it running for too long let alone drive it to audi main dealer as it sounds as if the bottom of the engine is going to collapse or something it is jerking really bad

seriously Tekin get your car down to a specialist you are soon getting to the point where good money will follow bad listen to themanthatcan the guys on here have some bloody good advice i know theyve helped me out loads !!! i had a similar problem and mine turned out to be 2 coil packs and a faulty cam position sensor.
The one thing you have to remember with a S3 is they are NOT cheap cars to fix and run, the majority of the time they will be faultless but on occasions like this you need a specialist. Best of luck mate hope it does get sorted for inters at the weekend.

No, Injector pack, or amplifier are seperate and ignite the coilpacks. Although I notice you have a 2002 S3 so then an amplifier (normally located on the air-intake box) is unlikely to be the problem as i think they incorporated this item into the coilpacks themselves post 2001..apologies for wasting your time their mate...

To be honest I havent got a clue how much he charges but I would be inclined to get someone who knows what they're talking about ie. a specialist as many people have said before. Hopefully your cousins mate is a specialist with vagcom.

Just like to echo Jamieface's comment about the S3 NOT being a cheap car to maintain and run... you really do need specialist kit to diagnose problems on this type of car and swapping parts for trial and error is 9 times out of 10 a very much false economy.

Anyway as said before good luck and hope you get it sorted soon.
