    over heating 1997 1.6 A3

    hi,
before i put my car in for an MOT today i heard a weird wheezing noice coming from the engine (first time i have heard this). the car passed the MOT but as i drove home the temperature warning light came on. the temperature gauge is on the max. also, the heater is blowing cold air even at its max warm setting - this was ok yesterday!!
i checked the coolant level and it appears to be ok.
there is obviously something wrong. ive had a quick search on the web and been having a look at your recent posts - any ideas what it could be?
my car has just done 60'000 miles.
    hope you can help,
    pete

yep water pump, it went on mine, overheated and only cold air. Depending on who does the work will cost 200 quid or so because the pump isn't very accessible and takes quite a while to replace. The pump itself is a exchange item, they have your old pump in return for a reduction in the cost of the new one, this is good but it worth getting it changed as soon as possible as if its too damage they won't take your old one. Think the pump is about 40 quid extra if the old ones not repairable. As it a P reg i'd avoid a dealer for this one as their labour charges are 80 quid an hour!! so would probably cost 400 to replace!!!!

just thought it worth checking that who ever does the work uses G12 coolent when refilling the system, some garages will normally use a cheaper type. G12 is pink so it easy to spot.

ok and another thought depending how hot and for how long the car got, the coolent temperature sensor or sensors might need replacing as they could have been damaged. Not sure how you'd normally check this as i used Vagcom (Diagnostic software on laptop) which i doubt you have, a dealer or specialist would have similar system
