sorry for sounding like a muppet but is it expensive and can I do it myself

when i turn the ignition on, then fire it up there is a diesel engine sounding noise(like a diesel car when it is idling) before the engine starts.then when i turn the igntion off, the car kind of shudders?wot does this mean?

My S3 does the same, wondered myself but never caused me any problems so havn't worried about it. Maybe its the tappets filling with oil?

turns out its the starter motor, not quite sure whats wrong with it but it seems to be the source of the problem
