Howdy,

When I had the car remapped my clutch started slipping. To start with it would only slip in 5th and 6th on WOT, but it's now got to the point where it's slipping in 2nd gear upwards on partial throttle so it's time to get her replaced :bye: I'm working on the assumption that because the car's done 110k miles it'll be needing a flywheel as well. If it doesn't then it's a bonus!

I've tried a couple of local specialists (JKM and ABTech) and JKM wanted £1100 fitted for a Sachs clutch, flywheel, and slave cylinder. Bit pricey I thought. ABTech are asking £950 for the same. Still pricey but £500 of that price is labour and £300 is the flywheel.

Do people think £950 sounds reasonable for a Sachs clutch, LUK flywheel, Valeo slave cylinder and fitting? Just want to make sure I'm not getting ripped off here!

Thanks,
Andy

I've got an LUK OEM spec clutch and flywheel. Purchased from GSF over 12 months ago and not had any problems since. Think it cost me about £700 fitted including release bearing (slave cylinder)

Ah see I've been advised by JKM to not go for the LUK clutch as it won't handle the torque produced by a remapped S3 for very long. How long have you had yours for?

Thanks for the tip homer..have dropped them an email.

Anyone else got any examples of what they've paid for their clutches?

i've just has a standard clutch and flywheel slave cylinder clutch switch and gearbox oil for about £735.

Thanks Rav - where are you located and where did you get the work done..was it an Audi specialist? I seem to be hearing about more and mroe people who have only paid between £700-£800 but I can't get any quotes near that..3 places now have wanted £1100

i got it done at midland VW which is a specialist place. a few of the chaps from here have got their cars done from there. i live in coventry and midland vw is in cannock just outside stafford.is that anywhere near you? The chap is called jody. if you mention your from audi-sport im sure he gives a little extra off.

Well I ended up accepting the quote of £950 as I couldn't find anywhere cheaper. Still think I'm paying a bit too much for labour (8hrs at £50/hr) but they're doing a few other bits while they've got the car that I'd prefer a VAG specialist to do.

She went in today and I had a call at 3:30 advising that the flywheel requires replacment as well as the clutch :( They also advised that the transfer boxes are leaking oil and need their seals replacing (I do remember they looked a bit wet last time it was up on a ramp) and the high pressure power steering pipe is leaking all over the steering rack and needs swapping out. Both items total £350 so I gave the garage I bought it from a call and they've agreed to pay for those bits and claim back under warranty

So that now totals around £2500 spent on essential parts since purchase 10 weeks ago. Luckily £1500 of it has been covered under warranty!

Thats good that the garage are covering a lot of it! I bet that if you told them about the map they wouldn't have! Not as much as you but since owning mine ( about 3 months )

I've needed or now need,

Rear ARB
Front Wishbone bushes
Rear Axel bushes
Coil pack
N75
Maf
petrol sender &
Door shut switch

F*%king Cars!! :banghead:

Just for the record my local audi specialist quoted £1335 for second hand 6 speed box, new clutch, new flywheel and labour.

Without clutch and flywheel...£835

Mine's an 2001 AMK S3 as well...having done 100,000 miles

I'll find out tomorrow if my clutch/flywheel needs doing as well!

:crying:

Good luck mate. Hope it all goes well. It'll be nice when you get it back!

He knows all about the remap and is happy to still cover anything which isn't directly affected by it. I've only got 2 weeks of warranty left so the discovery of these knackered parts couldn't have come at a better time!

Just had a call from the garage, who still have the car! They reckon it might not even be ready for the end of today. They've got it all back together and tried to bleed the clutch but the master cylinder has failed and needs replacing! £125 for the parts an labour.

I'm getting really fed up with this car now!

your having a nightmare mate. is that how much it costs for the slave cylinder (thats the releasing mechanism isnt it?) i had that included with my price of clutch, flywheel slave cylinder clutch switch and gearbox oil for £735. how much are you paying if you dont mind me asking.

It's the master cylinder which has failed, but yeah the slave cylinder was replaced along with the clutch at a cost of £42.99+VAT

When i did my master and slave, both parts were £47.50 each from Autosupplies

She's finally back under my wing! Total bill was just over £1512 :( That's for a clutch kit, flywheel, master and slave cylinders, gearbox and transfer box seals, high pressure power steering pipe, gearbox oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid and 12 hours of labour!

It's nice to be able to drive without the clutch slipping every 2 minutes  I had got used to the bite point being nice and high though (which made quick gear changes much easier) so it's hurting my leg having to push the pedal all the way to the floor! The 4 wheel alignment has made the drive much smoother as well..she drives perfectly straight and feels sure-footed.

Overall it's a lot of money to be spending out but it's good to know that the clutch probably won't need doing again during the life of the car.

so now you can finally enjoy your remap too!

What's it like? As quick as you were hoping?

Glad you got it sorted. Thats a LOT of money though!

My upgrade to single mass G60 flywheel with 300lbft rated VR6 clutch kit only cost me £350 in total :)

£1500 quid is a joke for a clutch + fitting, did all mine my self at a cost of under £300, i did not change the fly wheel but still.....

If only it was that simple! She's still running low on power. The garage were going to do some testing to try and find out why (I still think it's the MAF) but I needed the car back today and simply couldn't afford for them to carry out any more work.

It's driving nicely but no way as well as just after the remap. It's lacking the extra punch below 3000rpm. I'm hoping that at some point I can try somebody elses MAF in my car and see if that helps, but until then she'll just have to stay as is.

The fitting is the expensive bit though. The clutch and slave cylinder itself was £650 fitted so when you consider that almost £500 (8hrs at £50/hr +VAT) of that is labour then you can see where the big money come from. I've heard of garages charging only 5-6 hours for a clutch change but failed to find anywhere locally who would.

There was no labour charge to do the flywheel so that was just the cost of the parts. Then you've got 1.5 hours for the master cylinder which is good going as I've been told it should take around 2hrs, 2hrs to replace the gearbox seals and power steering pipe, and 45mins to do a couple of other little jobs I gave them.

In total that's £720 of labour and £800 of parts. It's a lot of money but when you don't have the mechanical knowledge or tool/facilities to perform this kind of work yourself then you have to bend over and pay for and experts time and expertise!
