slight sttuter and not gareth gates

just wondering if something is on its way out

put my foot down to overtake and the car stuttered then accelerated and stutted again. After Id overtaken the cars I tried again and got one small stutter. Drove steady for 2 miles then she was fine for the blast down the motorway and dual carriageway to work.

any pointers ... not that ling since I cleaned my DV valve.

Dodgy fuel ??? as I filled up last night and have done 15 miles since.

    any pointer grateful

What rpm? Above 4/5000rpm? In some old S3's the TIP collapsed meaning restriction and stuttering happened. Other than that, MAF (take it off), TB (due a clean), DV (put old one back on), N249 (check all is good), Hoses (check all is good), Coil Packs (Vag.com it) and a piece of string!

Sounds like the classic on the way out MAF, do a scan with vagcom to see if anythings logged up.

the garage is the only one I have used for the last 4 years,

    I don`t have vagcom

Never had it before so doubt the TIP is colapsing but you never know. 02 plate btw

might check connection to maf and pipe conecctions there as I did have that out about 8 weeks ago ( only 500 miles ago).

strange thing is it drove home ok last night ( with a bit of welly) at first it felt like the clutch or esp kicking in but wasn`t that.

rpm I think was 3-5k wasn`t looking at that while overtaking lol.

whats the best thing to clean the maf with some electrical degreaser ????

I've got an 02 plate and had to change the TIP as it had a split in it and some of the 1999/2000 were prone to collapsing - only way to check is to get underneath and above and give it a squeeze if it is really really really soft there's your problem

For the MAF and TB Cleaning check out Cleaning MAF and Throttle Body gives two links to how to's

Shame you haven't got VAG.COM - Anyone nearby that can check you out?

ok after a quick look under the hood I founf the Tip top clip slightly loose, tightened and car is worse.

So cover off at home to find this ...

    and this

looks like the top of the spark plug is in the coil pack (i am right in saying these are the coil packs ???)

looks like I need at least 1 spark plug and a coil pack ( they were only changed 13k ago)

hope this cures the problem its what it feels like a slight missfire if not then Ill have to dig deeper

the long metal tubes are indeed coil packs - the one on the left looks absolutely shagged (technical term).

It also looks like it's been exposed to extreme heat based on the colour of it - the one on the right is how they normall look (well maybe a little bit dirtier than that one).

At a guess i'd go for the spark plug not being fitted properly and as a result it allowed the detonation heat from the cylinder to get through the small gap and that heat's damaged the coil pack resulting in the cylinder not working as well as it should and your misfire / stutter.

New packs are about 26 quid from audi or abit less from vag.parts, your probably best off changing all the spark plugs as well just for peace of mind.

for the sake of 26 i'd replace the coil pack using one from audi and bin that damaged one.(might also be worth getting a spare just in case)

As for plugs - opinions seem to vary, I think audi install bosch ones as standard but you might want to do a search to see what other S3 owners recommend.

Stick a set of plugs in it quick.

Is yours remapped. With the heat that has clearly been generated there to discoulour that coilpack, I reckon your plug electrode may be shagged. If it falls apart it could do nasty things inside your motor!

I just posted on the plug thread about leaving plugs in for long periods!! Regular changing or at least checking and cleaning on turbo cars is a very good idea!

    !!

speak to vagparts.com for the coil packs their ll send you latest revision i think its R. As for plugs the standard ones should be fine unless you wanna spend a fortune on super ones which wont do anything.

Carefully!! A fine wire brush is not too bad, but try not to cause too many scratches on the electrode part.
I have a special cleaner tool that uses fibreglass fibres to clean them without scratching.

well new coil pack and a set of plaugs and shes back on song . Think I now have one R coil pack 2 x L and one J. NGK spark plugs with no screw on top so shouldn`t get this problem again.

Last time I pay someone to service my car the plugs wern`t even in to the correct torque.

the coil pack was 25 quid and a set of plugs was 30 quid from GSF. make sure you get the good plugs and don`t be fobbed off with what they are trying to shift at the time.

oh and genuine audi coil pack, only 25p chaeper than audi but audi plugs are 10 each plus vat
