How to check oil?

Ok i am having some trouble with oil.

When i check the oil in the morning without the engine on it is bang on middle of the high and low indicator on the dipstick.

When i run the engine for a few minutes and check the oil, the oil only barely touches the bottom of the dipstick.

What is the correct method of checking the oil, I don't want to be running low or top up and overfill.

Check the oil when the engine is COLD and on a level surface.

as above ......... or at least with the engine not running and enough time for the oil to settle if you need a rough idea quickly

Defo a level surface, but usually best when cold or luke warm...

... and certainly not with the engine running!

As others have said, the only way to measure oil is when the engine is cold and on a flat surface, this is the only way to get a standardised reading.

Ok, think i got it wrong. WHen people said with the engine warm i thought with the engine on.
