There are 2 types of automatic available on the New A3 in the UK at least.
The 2.0 FSI is available with a conventional tiptronic automatic gearbox and the 2.0 TDI is available with Audi's new DSG gearbox. This does away with the normal torque-converter and uses an integrated dual-clutch. This gearbox was specifically designed for sporty driving and good fuel economy.
I have not driven a tiptronic version but the DSG gearbox is so much fun to use because you can let the box change gear automatically, flick a centre console lever or steering wheel paddles to change gear yourself or override the auto box if you want to with no lose of power and much better fuel economy than the tiptronic.
I have been driving manual petrol engined cars for 38 years and the DSG has converted me to both the DSG auto gearbox and to a Diesel engine.
David, this is about to change, at least according to Auto Express:
"Diesel fans will be able to choose from the existing 1.9 and 2.0-litre TDI units, while DSG gearboxes will be optional on the 2.0 FSI, 2.0 TDI and 3.2 V6."
