Hi Guys,

Here's the storey;
i bought her under the weather with no history knowing nothing about the car for too much money and was too lazy to do anything about it! YES! The gearbox was knackered when i bought it for £2500. Stupid i know, but i test drove it around Stockport and never thought to try fifth gear, it was only when i got on the motorway when i tried to select fifth nowt happened, the engine just revved away, i was fed up with being in stockport all day getting the stealer to replace fuses and tax and fix washers etc, and didn't want to turn round and take the car back, he'd given me three months warrenty so it thought that would cover it. No! The warrenty was only for £150 with £50 excess, so i didn't even bother as i had no more money to put towards it (just spent it all on the car). I've put up with now for 10,000 miles in the four months that i've had her, no more problems, even fuel is ok £53 just got me 512 miles. I'm now on the hunt for a second hand gearbox.

You've been a great audience

Thank you and good night!

Rob

Very likely to be a linkage problem, take it to a friend or a local garage that you know, they maybe able to tell you....

Thanks for the responses. I really hope it is only a linkage problem. My mates are useless, i'll take it to a specialist and let them have a ganders.

yeah, def. sounds like linkage or something along those lines. 5th gear gets the least stress out of all the cogs, so 1st to 2nd synchro usually goes well before any of the others.

Mmmmm interesting, i'll hold onto my money for a bit and get uncle Tony to have a ganders.

5th gear is really over rated anyway!!

The quickest Golf made only had 4 gears!!
