    DV/N249 help

Got a custom code phase 1 remap the other week and also replaced the standard dv with a forge 007p. Sometimes the car has no boost and feels like there is no turbo. If i turn the car off and on again its fine!

The 007p was stuck closed so i took that off and put the standard one back on but the problem is still there.

Got it on VAGCOM today and got the following errors:

17608 - Boost Pressure Control Valve (N249): Mechanical Malfunction
    P1200 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

17705 - Pressure Drop between Turbo and THrottle Valve (check D.V.!)
    P1297 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Can anyone shed any light - what does this mean? Is it the N249 that needs replaced? How easy/cheap is this to replace?

Sorry for all the questions but any help much appreciated!

The N249 is a protection device. It has the ability to open the DV via the vacuum reservoir if required by the ECU.

The map should be good and may have highlighted an issue with the N249? You can disconnect the valve mechanically if you want to eliminate it, but that code sounds pretty straight forward and sounds like it needs replacing.

    N249 for a BAM engine part code is 078 906 283N

Had the 17705 Code on mine and it turned out to be a split on a oil carrier hose off the TIP. So check all main and minor hoses for splits or looseness.

Looks like I have the same problem on mine, identical in fact. Custom code, loss of boost, next time I turn the key it's back! I get the same codes too.

I know the N249 valve in on top of the cylinder head on the S3's, but where is it on my TQ? Anyone know the part number for an N249 for a ARY engine?

My car originally had a baileys dv on which broke so a normal 1 was put on...... i get the same code '17705 - Pressure Drop between Turbo and THrottle Valve (check D.V.!) P1297 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent' nothing about the n249 though....... is it worth having a pressure check to see if anthings leeking???? + change the DV?? cheers

Sorry to ask this question again but I'm stumped, done a search on here and googled it but I still can't find the answer. Anyone know where the N249 is on an A3 T? A mate reckoned it was near the dipstick in front of the block, before I disassemble the mess of wires/hoses, can anyone confirm this?

Thats probably the best idea then you can just order it by P/No, I had the same issue when i ordered mine had to show them where it was on the diagrams.

I always find http://www.vagcat.com/ useful for checking/finding part numbers

guys, i dont know if your interested but i have found that my fault code is down to a T piece that connects 3 pipes on top of the engine... the piece is prone to breaking according to the mechanic i use..... was about to change the solenoid valve too

Got it on Vag Com again today, the N249 fault code has now gone so the new N249 must've done the trick. However, the pressure drop between DV and Throttle fault code is back, despite a new DV being fitted so thats not the problem. Had a quick look around for any obvious split vaccum hoses but couldn't see anything out of order and it's still got no boost in the morning until i turn the engine off/on again then its fine! Getting it booked in next week so they can do some logging to see if that throws up anything.

Just as a quick update, I took my car to my Audi Guru today. He read the car and it showed no faults. He then took it for a blast and said there was a definate hesitation, like a loss of boost. Using some boost detection spray(? - not sure what this is, apparently it shows up where boost pipes are leaking) he went round the whole engine bay, nothing was leaking.

He then came up with a possible reason for the problem, apparently as the car is remapped and it's running standard plugs, a weird thing can happen where the extra force of induction can blow out the spark (yeah, I can see you shaking your heads from here but at this stage I'll try anything), so he recommends replacing the plugs with some good quality tri-spark types. I'll let you know how I get on.

Also he was saying that he had all sorts of problems with non-Rosstech cables when using Vag-com, with false codes being thrown up and issues with them not fully removing codes from the ECU. Just something to think about fellas (and ladies if there are any still on here!)

That code is normally thrown when the ECU tries to use the N249 to dump boost but the ECU can't detect a drop in boost pressure from the MAP sensor... this has been known to happen on bad remaps and/or if you have bypassed the N249... the N249 is used by the ECU to dump boost when it thinks it has detected a problem so uses the N249 and the vacuum store (the black tank next to it) to operate the dump valve even when on boost...

Its not an electrical issue as thats a different code...

Are there any other codes coming up?

IOM-S3 - I had a similar problem when I got my A3. Mine was down to the map I had on it, It was an older map and when giving the car the beans, it would effectively send the car into a safe mode, where the car would feel like a non turbo (with no lights on the dash), if I pulled over, turned it off and back on again it was fine. Since had it re remapped and it has never done it since.

Same thing happens with mine. Oddly it has stopped doing it recently. I'm putting it down to the cold weather. It would also only present the fault code from a cold engine. Once warm it would never appear. Very strange, but clearly something to do with the N249 bypass I would say.

cheers reesyboy and hadders, thing is it will do it without me even going into boost, so like if i drive 5-10 miles just going slow and at low rpm it will sometimes just not boost?

Yup. Sounds about right. As I said though, mine has kind of disappeared with the warmer weather. Even stranger!
