Right then guys im pretty ****** off !Ive missed the RR day @ awesome gti due to this, My 2000 X reg S3 is making a very worrying noise from the engine its a loud tapping noise and it seems to be coming from inside the rocker cover near the cam belt cover. It only happens @ about 1600-1800 RPM the car doesnt idle roughly there seems to be no power loss oil is ok and the noise doesnt dissapear with the clutch depressed. can some one please help me here and put my mind at rest. Am i looking at a big bill or is this something less serious ??

thanks guys

j

The noise sounds like a screwdriver is being banged against it only pretty loud. Has anyone else had this or got any ideas ???????????

Sounds to me like the rocker cover has go to come off! Can't say i've heard much about what your describing. :sorry:

yeh mate check the rockers or even a loose manifold bracket....you should of gone down to awesome anyway, im sure the boys would of looked at it for you. it would of been like a forum without the typing and waiting part haha!!

I wanted too but im seriously worried about f**king up the engine ! I dont even know if its doing any damage !

could be a collapsed belt tensioner. UNdo the cambelt cover, squeeze your finger in to presson the front of the cambelt run and see if it is lose. if it is, dont drive it, you will probably find ball bearings in the bottom of the cover near the crankshaft pulley.

its cambelt time!!

I hope its not this !!!! The cambelt was only done in november by the dealer i bought it off !!! I wonder if i would be covered even though it just come out of its warranty ??? Surely the cambelt work would be covered for 12 months or 12000 miles ??

Sorry mate. Im just too scared to drive it anywhere !! Im booking it in to the local specialist so fingers crossed !

oh sorry dude sounds like it could be serious and i didnt really give a serious reply...my apologies.:friends: Hope it goes well mate.

Have you or anyone you know got AA/RAC membership? It might be worth giving them a call...

If it is a belt tensioner it is an easy fix. If it was VW parts used, they have 2 year gtee, so take it back to dealer to fix it if it is. but check it out first, if the belt is loose, DONT START IT!

My 18T did it 6 moths after VW dealer did the belt!! Car was rattling but still going like th clappers! When I sussed what it was, I got it the the garage asap and it was amazed it still ran!!

Cheers simch im gonna have a look tomorrow and check if its loose or not. The guy i bought it off can worry about it if it is !!! Thanks once again for your help
