Rick do you mean the master cylinder? The slave cylinder is an integral part of the release bearing assembly...

10 hours is the book time, a gearbox specialist should be able to do it half that, agree a fixed fee as opposed to paying by the hour, I paid 225(or something like that) to get my whole gearbox swopped over along with a clutch I supplied. Dropped the car off at 10am, and it was ready by 4.30pm

Ive recently had a problem with my clutch.

I was turning around pushed teh clutch pedal in and it never cam back up. When you pull the pedal with your hand you can hear it sucking air in and pushing it out. Do you think this is the Master cylinder on the clutch pedal? i think it may be this, if so how much do you think i will be paying and where can i source the part from?

just come back from the garage, he changed the pressure valve and the clutch does feel alot better,

he says the hydrolic release bearing and clutch plates will need replacing,

650 plus vat inc parts and labour

its on etka on illustration 141-45

    i find it very expensive,

Maybe they didn't bleed the system properly. If you do get a new clutch fitted make sure they change the slave cylinder at the same time as Stewart says (which I think I informed him of) it acts as the release bearing.

system has been bleeded a few times now, yea the garage recommended that the slave cylinder to be replaced as well,

wouldnt mind taking it to jabba sport but they are about 1.30 away from me

cant believe everything added up is going to cost up to a grand

Dear do - I had flywheel, clutch and both cylinders replaced with LUK (OEM spec) and that cost about £700.

yeah - Flywheel, clutch and slave was £440 from GSF (including discount) and fitting was £180. before I bought this I thought it was the master cylinder which I got VW in Halifax to replace for about £180 for parts and labour.

    Rick,

10 hours is book as others have said, just the pure mechanics of disassembly/reassembly and rebleed even with a no problems i would say is 4-4.5 hours...but you'll have to find a real trusted back street garage to quote on those labour hours. The 10 hours figure will also/should also? include the time to a full 4 wheel alignment which needs to be done since the front sub-frame is dropped. I doubt Jabba would quote much less then 7...but who knows

I've gone through this pain recently, and my labour bill came to 7 hours...so not the best, but it was done by Awesome, who i trust implicitly to do a pro job, and back it up afterwards with excellent CS - all in mine was 850 -which is everything (including flywheel, realignment etc) except master slave.

I reckon my guys must have been charging £30 an hour labour. So 6 hours in total. (and it probably took less than that) I took mine to a clutch and gearbox specialist. They had converted a barn on a farm so hence why labour was cheaper.

    Aky,

Out of interest for future work, who and where was the place you took yours to for the clutch...30 an hour is more tempting than 49.50 an hour at Awesome.

If it's a clutch 'kit' Rick, then it should come with a new release bearing mate.

HAha, the main dealer guy did it in 3 hours at the main dealer, and yet the dealer would quote and charge 8 hours for the same job!
It's the "bonus" scheme the guys work on that causes this, they bill about 20hours a day chargeable hours, but all mysteriously seem to work only 8! !

Another part of the whole aftersales ripoff!! I mean if it can be done in 3, why does the book say 8! ? OH before anyone says its because things dont always go to lan and it can take a lot longer if something breaks or wont come undone, you can bet your mortgage if it took them 12 hours to complete, they would charge you 12 hours (or maybe 14!!)lol

Good result Rick, now don't forget to do the overtime at MaccyD's to pay for it all.

A little place on the outskirts of halifax. Its a converted farm building into a unit. Seem to keep busy and obviously the price is pretty good. Far cheaper than a Vag Specialist. I have the number. PM me if interested.
