    Question DIY Front Pads & Disks Replacement - Tool Checklist

    Hi,

    I would like to replace my front pads and disks myself this weekend (weather permitting) and would just like to know if any S3 specific tools I may require.

    I have replaced pads and disks on my previous cars and used a G-Clamp to push the pistons in. Is this safe/correct with a 2001 S3?

    Would anyone happen to know off hand what size sockets/spanners I will require? Torque settings would also be grrrreat!

    no special tools required for the fronts, when you push the piston back in release the bleed valve, then top up the lost fluid after, although I would recomend changing the brake fluid too. Rear brakes require a special tool, cost about 20 - 25 iirc from halfords or GSF

    You wont even really need to touch the piston on the fronts or do anything with the fluid. You should be able to just slip the new pads in and on to the disc

    Ferodo DS Performance Pads (Not DS 2500's, but the replacement to the old DS 2000's I believe) - and Black Diamond Grooved Disks.
    Hope to change brake fluid when car is next in for a service.

    brake pads.

    Just finished replacing my Black Diamond Predator pads an hour ago, relatively straight forward, its a 7mm allen key for the guide pins, and you'll have to loosen the bleed nuts to push the cylinder back. the pads themselves are a straight forward fit however the wear indicator connector on the pads was a male, and so was the one on the car, so had to cut the female off the old pad and splice it onto the new one, no big problem though. Took about an hour all in all, once finished i topped the reservoir up to replace the lost fluid, and all seems fine now, going to take it into a specialist to get the brakes bled over the next few days just to make double sure.

    Cant help with the discs, sorry. Have fun

    Hmm, the guide pins you mention have thrown me a bit. As long as I have 7mm allen key, should it be obvious as to what I've got to do? :S

    Should be obvious, once you get the wheel off and you start trying to get the callipers off the calliper carrier you'll notice that there are two rubber stoppers, one at each end of the calliper housing furthest away from you, pull the caps off and in there is a bolt with a 7mm hexy head on it, unscrew both of these and u can then slide the whole thing off the disc, probably leaving the outer pad resting on the disc, the rest is straight forward.

    Check this thread out should be all the info you need on here for both discs and pads.
