Hi guys,

I had a remap done last month and the car felt pretty good, however I did notice after a while that it seemed a bit sluggish in 4th when in higher rpm range 4-6k. I took the car in for a service at a local specialist and they hooked it up to th dyno, the figures seemed ok, 200bhp/225lb-ft, the graph print out was a bit shocking. The torque peaks at 2700rpm at 225 then drops too down 185 at 3000 which point it pretty much plateaus untill 4700rpm and then dives rapidly down to 115 at 6000rpm.

Also I had the car around 9 months before i had it remapped when I took it in it had no errors, today I was told i got the following fault: charge pressure control - negative deviation, which aparently means the ecu is looking for more boost than it is recieving? They said they couldnt tell of any immediate leaks but said it wasnt right.. any ideas on this? Bit depressing really :(

thanks,
Sat

Well I wont mention names just yet, will hopefully go back to where I had it done and see if I can get this resolved. Just a bit gutted! It dosent feel bad to drive except the 4th gear pull which I dont usually rev the hell out of anyway but its just the wondering on what your missing compared to another map! Funny thing is I didnt seem to notice an issue whenI had it done, although prehaps it took a while to settle in and by that time I had made myself believe all was good :/

Just a quick update, took the car back had another map put on. Its less aggressive than the first by a fair bit in the lower rpm range previously when hitting 3000 rpm I was pushing 225 lb-ft, now its 200. The curve before 3000 has an even wider gap, although maybe this was to be expected seeing as the requested boost wasnt being met. On the upside the torque no longer drops off at 4500 as before but holds until 5500. Still need to drive it some more, although it will have adapted by now as I have done 200 miles! After I got back I went through the dyno runs and here's what I got roughly (damn scale on graph printout was shocking!)

I notice the lack of torque (compared to first map) up to 3500rpm a fair bit! I havent had a chance to really feel the difference though at the higher rev range where it has now improved. What you guys think?

Klep,

its a big improvement from your 1st map? i was thinkin whether to get my audi remapped but its just a standard 1.8 sport do you think it worth doing?

Yeah I think it is, before I would have been better off shifting at just over 4500 rpm to stay on the peak torque curve, where as now i can carry on to about 5500rpm before shifting. So in theory I have an extra 1000rpm in each gear where as before although the initial acceleration would have been a bit quicker going through the full rev range the second map is faster. Think thats right not quite sure. Anyhow i'l look into ideal shift points later!

If its not the turbo model then I'm not sure if its worth the cash as n/a engines dont see a huge boost. If its the the standard 1.8T sport with 150hp and around 160 lbft torque then most maps I saw were hitting 200hp and 210+ torque and so worth the £250-350 imo, depending on where you take your car.

Remap without a turbo is a waste of cash!

Klepto, what fuel were you running in yur car when you were having problems?
I am wondering if it was pinking and the ecu was retarding the timing at 3k revs + meaning the torque fell off.
I presume it was some generic map, not a custom one done on a set of rollers?
The 18T is very7 sensitive to fuel when mapped. Even as stock, the S3 motors are only set up for 98ron.
Even moving between brands of fuel can make 10hp and 20ft of torque difference, but what will kill the torque and drivablility is the onset of detonation. The knock sensors will pull the timng and absolutely kill the power. In rare cases, the knock sensors can become lose and drag the timing back as they vibrate. Other resonant frequencies from vibrations can in rare circumstances do the same.
Make sure you run it in V power or Tesco 99 in future to keep it at its best.

Yeah I usually use Tesco 99, thats what was in the car on the first map. It was a custom map, had it on the dyno got the readouts then they went away and tinkered for a bit and uploaded the new map, not sure what they change though! Apparently found another region to code to do with boost pressure. When I had the second map put on it was using 97 ron as I didnt have the petrol to get to tesco's lol so I filled up with super unleaded from my local waitrose, and like sainsburys I think its 97 ron! Cars back on 99 now though. I am having it put back on the dyno at my local garage tomorrow to see if theres any difference, the car should have adapted to the map and its also running on 99, hopefully will get better results! Car feels good to drive and a lot smoother when taking it to 5000 + rpm. Will post up results of tomorrow's run.

I presume its a 18t sport yours then? A K03 turbo on it, not the k04 s3 style turbo?
That second graph looks far better.
Had you always used tesco 99 or did you fill up with it just before the inital remap?
When you took it back, did it throw up that fault code again?

Not sure about which turbo it is, its the 1.8T (AJQ - 180bhp), when I took it too my local specialist they refered to it as the ko4 but then it was just a passing comment not sure if it really is though, may be ko3s? Yeah on the initial map I did fill up with 99 just before although I had travelled over 150 miles so would have thought that would be enouhg time to adapt! The fault code had not returned after having it reset which was a week prior to the second map. Will be on the rollers again at 1pm, this should let me have a better comparison as the graph is more detailed than the one I got from where it was mapped, I also have a readout for the first map at the same place.

Edit: Yeah it is ko3s, results were ok, a bit less peak power on the 2nd map as I thought but much smoother.
