A3 tdi 1st / 2nd gear selection problem

i have a problem engaging 1st and 2nd gears - the clutch when released stalls the engine

the engine will engage reverse and 3rd upwards and will drive

any thoughts

someone has said there may be a cable adjustment or breakage to the lower ratio selector???

A bit more info fella, that makes not much sense! !
What happened to cause this? Did it just start doing it, make a bang, do it while driving?

You say it stalls when the clutch is released? Is this because the gearbox is locked up solid in these gears, (ie gbox failure) or because its not actually in 1st / 2nd, rather in 3rd or 4th, meaning it stalls as you aint giving it enought revs?
Have you tried engaging "1st or 2nd" and rocking the car forward form outside, engine off, to see if it all turns over?

it's a common fault on 6 speed box in cold weather. Synchromesh is not good
on early 6 speeders

does it get better or always bad?
