Bought a little G12 this morning and did the job. I found I didn't need to remove the dipstick, only the covers around it. The plug on mine was on the right hand side so didn't need to take that off!!. Its fairly straight forward from there on in. What a TW*T to get the lower screw back in
:). I should of had an early night Friday!!. Didn't lose much coolant as long as you are fairly quick swapping them over. Ran it after with open coolant circuit, topped it back up and went out, checked for leaks all OK. so let it get hot fans came on OK and needle is slap bang on 90 whatever now!:icon_thumright: . On No. 49 on A/C Its running abut 92 degrees now which is loads better than 65-75!!. Heaters on HI now and I can make my eyes dry out!!!!!!!!
I recommend anyone having wondering temp to do it or get it done! running a car cool can be worse than overheating long term!!

REMEMBER THE FIREWORK CODE!!!!

Best get mine done, it's been a job I have been putting off for ages.

where did you get the stat from and how much?

Got it from my local vw dealer with the G12 cost just over £20. If you look at my other posts i give you the part numbers. well for an APY engine.

How difficult is it to replace on your own?? as i am pretty sure my car has this issue now as it will not get to 90 anymore and infact the temp fluctuates whilst driving between 70-85.

I only just got my car back from the garage so don't wanna do anything to hurt it. Am prepared to go back to Audi to get it sorted but could do without the inconvienience of not having my car for the day.

Just got conformation that Garages would need my car for a day to change the thermostat, not really prepared to give the car up for a day as this is the first week i have had it back in 14 weeks!!

So can i fit this myself without doing any damage to the car??? i am no mechanic but willing to try.

If your not mechanically minded then you may struggle. Tools are another important factor. If a garage needs a day to change a stat then they are takin the Pi*s. Have a look at this link see what you think its been posted before on here a few times. Ignore the bit about plug on the left and the dipstick removal I didn't need to remove either may be slightly different on the APY.http://forums.audiworld.com/tt/msgs/1304805.phtml

Had a looksie at the Link and i think it may well be slightly above my level of skill and i dont have the correct tools to do the job. Have spoken to another local independant VAG specialist and he thinks it will take 1 - 1.5 hours to do so have booked it in with him on friday this week.

My car has been to enough garages in the last few months to last it for the rest of its life so i hope this is the last visit for a while.
