Gearbox Problem!

Hi there, this seems like a great forum to raise questions compared to others so......What it is, i've got an A3 1.8 Sport 1997, haven't had it long and I cant select 5th gear at all, it doesnt ingage what so ever. I hoping its just a gear linkage problem, hopefully only needs adjusting. Just wandered if anybody had a bit of information on the matter?

Mine started some of the same way, and I had to replace the whole box.
It was a direct fault of a "normal" problem (according to Audi) on the cars that something brakes in the axle, then gets speed from a chainwheel in the box and makes a crack in it so oil spills out.

Check your oil.

But, this was on a 1.6 - dunno if the box is the same on 1.8 - whoom I doubt.
