Hi all,

My friend Si is getting a new car in 3 months, either an M3 Evo or an Audi S3 (210BHP version). I keep telling him to get the BMW. So I said that I would post a message on the BMW e36coupe forum and this Audi forum. (You can view the BMW forum at http://cgi.bmwe36coupe.plus.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3548 )

What are peoples views on the Audi S3 compared to the M3 Evo?

Also, in the Salisbury/Southampton area, are there any good Audi specialists?

Cheers to all who reply

Autotechnik in Southampton are excellent Audi/VW specialists. Call Vanessa on 02380-666200.
They use all original parts, at half the price of those Shysters Southampton Audi.

I think that's 5.5 secs not really that impressive for 321bhp.

Threw a couple of grenades over at the BMW forum - friendlys of course! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

Easy choice for me I'd take the M3 anyday of the week, from a drivers point of view. I love the BMW six and the fantastic handling that the BMW's have in general is just so far superior to that of the Audi's.

Whilst the Audi is no doubt slightly better built, there are items which let it down, one of my biggest gripes of the S3 is how little support I feel the recaros offer especially when offered up against any of the BMW sports seats. The armrest in the Beemers is far far superior /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif and the driving position in the BMW is just so much nicer for me, but sitting in both you can decide on these things for yourself.

Give me a bucket load of hp and RWD and I'd be in my element /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile_smoking.gif

It does depend on your style of driving and capabilities as a driver I feel as to which of the cars is right for your friend.

To my mind it aint a fair comparison. BMW M3 is a 45-50K car where as the S3 was around the 30K mark. If money was no object though I'd easily take the M3.

Gotta agree with Gambba in that it does depend on the style and capabilities.

I haven't been fortunate to get a M3 but have toyed around in a 328ci, for me it was a very nice car and was smooth, but the RWD (though the ultimate driving form) was not for me. My main gripe was not being able to get a smooth driving line out the the beamer when I was hurrying down a nice country road, I guess my inexperience of RWD at the time didn't help and really I never acquired that driving technique. I think with getting a EvoM3 you must have that acquird taste, otherwise you may wrap it round a tree off that bend you thought you could get round that little bit faster.

Anyways, since then I have stuck with 4WD cars: a 210hp S3, a 276hp EVO6 and a 225hp S3) as I prefer the traction gained and the knowledge of all 4 wheels helping me get the power down, rather than being a drag racer relying on your rear wheels.

Naturally the EV06 was something else it really was f**king awesome and that really was a different drive to the BMW and the S3, as it was a mixture of both. If I have 25K to spare I would get a EVO6 defo 19K for a good example and the rest spare rfor insurance, tyres and the 4500 miles servicing required don't forget the 45ltr tank that does 90-130 on a cane /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burningmad.gif.

However I always went back to the /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heart.gif S3 , mainly as this car had everything that you could imagine in terms of toys and more importantly was 4WD. With the S3 you have climate control, leccy everything, leather seats, 6spd, xenon, 4wd, but then you have the engine a 1.8T on AVS (therefore servicing every 15/20K miles compared to BMW every 10k (I guess?) ). You also have the exclusivity of owning an S3, M3's yes may be more pricey and have that pedigree of being a B M W, but they are common IMO. Yes you have 321bhp turning out under 6 secs, with the 210 you have 6.5, get a chip to get to 265 and then you'll have your sub 6 sec (I stand corrected, as I haven't got into tuning...just yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/idea.gif).

They are two very different cars and should be weighed up from all angles, not just looks and power, but utimatley the driving style that is required as well as how comfortable you are in the cars, as you'll be paying a few thousand on the car and the insurance, so you better make the right choice.

Well my flat mate had an evo M3 conv for about 6 mths and was selling it for 4mths.

Whilst I did like it, I was disappointed that the engine note was rather raspy and very metallic. Nothing like the current M3. Generally more of a crusier than a supper sharp performance car.

As I mentioned, he only had it for 10mths, bought it for 21k, and eventually sold it for 13.5K (and he used to catch the train alot hoping not too erode value!)

So money is a big factor.

In my opinion I am happy I bought the S3 for 23K new (import) and know its only gonna loes a few thousand over the 3 year ownership I'll keep it for...
