Arrow WHATS YOUR AVERAGE MPG 1.8 TS 2000???

    Hi

Just out of interest if you have the 1.8 TS whats your average mpg?

Mine is 28.4 which seems very low considering I dont drive it hard, although I'm led to believe it could be linked to the fact my temp sender is not working properly?

last week, with just me in the car, i drove 358 miles to work and back monday-friday, and averaged 38.1mpg, thats 5 miles in slow traffic, followed by 20miles up the A3, then 5 miles in almost standstill traffic. each way, every day. so pretty good

this weekend, i went from portsmouth to coventry, three 26'' bikes, and three people in the car, with all our clothes and bike stuff, did 339 miles total, averaged 34mpg, wasnt hanging around at all. cruised up at 80-85, cruised back at about 90-95

lets hope it is linked to my temp sender then?!?! i only do a 12 mile round trip to work and don't get to go over 50mph When I have been on longer drives she'll cruise at 80 and tell me its doing 38-40mpg!! So it might just be the short trips that bring it right down -average speed is 17mph

Mine tends to average about 40 mpg when I drive it and about 32 mpg when my girlfriend drives it. I drive it VERY gently though, 5th gear at 35 mph etc. My driving tends to be varied, both M-ways and urban. The best I ever got was 49 mpg on a round trip from my house in Tunbridge Wells (kent) to Southampon and back (approx 200 miles)
mostly on the M25 and M3 but a bit of town driving in and out of urban areas at each end.

If anyone wants to know my secret its to just change gear vey early and cruise between 60 and 70 on the M-ways.... and don't let the girlfriend drive!

I also have a faulty temp sender, averaging 27mpg so I guess we should sort it out!

my 1.8T Quattro struggles to stay above 30MPG, driving really sensibly too. Had it remapped (some say it can help MPG figures) and flushed the engine with Redex, no change. The book figure says a combined cycle of 29MPG but im only doing that on long gentle drives! Anyone think there could be something wrong? Its been hooked up to VagCom, no faults detected.

so for a 1.8 Turbo driven quite sensible 28.4 is low!! I think the temp sender being faulty must be affecting it? anyone know if this is an easy job?

The temp sensor is an easy job mate, and its only about £20 so just change it. It causes overfuelling, hence your low MPG.

are there any posts on herer to show how to change it, i think i mite have to give it a whirl. the parts can be bought online cant they? vagparts.com or summin similar? i'm not one for DIY usually but the garages are doing my head in. My car is hesitating and spluttering and the garage took it for a drive and booted it and couldnt tell. Just said" thats got impressive performance"

I assume theyre just not used to it so they cant feel the difference when summin goes wrong

ive just got a haynes manual from the library! it looks fairly straight forward but I'm not keen on doing it!! You have to know what type of sensor you need as there are a few different ones!! I founf one at a local dealer 20, He said tis straight forward but you need to drain coolant first!

Read it again, i was quoting a previous comment made by LaSarthe&Back saying he averaged 41 mpg.

i cant be doing with draining the coolant, i only just had my waterpump changed, still, if you do get yours fixed or find out anything new be sure to let me know. I'l be getting mine tested soon so fingers crossed we'l get to the bottom of it. These supposes "BulletProof engines" DONT HALF HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS

problem is though everything is not cheap to fix......and i took my car back to the garage (see my other post) and he put it on VAG and it come up with no errors, its drinkin petrol, missfiring and spluttering and fourth and fifth gears and apparently nothing wrong with it. so now in order to find out why i need to drive 20 miles to the nearest specialist in order to plug it into the computer and take it for a drive and analyse the inparticular fuigures....all of which i know nothing about, apparently it could be a lambda probe causing the problem. expensive part. ah well

I get 310 miles out of the tankfull and an average of 30.5mpg 50/50 driving (go to work by bypass, come back home through the town), not hanging about either. I keep trying to get a bit more out of tankfull as i thought it was a bit low, however, i can't be bothered driving sensible at very low speeds plus i always seem to be in a hurry somewhere lol
