Hi

Just out of interest if you have the 1.8 TS whats your average mpg?

Mine is 28.4 which seems very low considering I dont drive it hard, although I'm led to believe it could be linked to the fact my temp sender is not working properly?

last week, with just me in the car, i drove 358 miles to work and back monday-friday, and averaged 38.1mpg, thats 5 miles in slow traffic, followed by 20miles up the A3, then 5 miles in almost standstill traffic. each way, every day. so pretty good

this weekend, i went from portsmouth to coventry, three 26'' bikes, and three people in the car, with all our clothes and bike stuff, did 339 miles total, averaged 34mpg, wasnt hanging around at all. cruised up at 80-85, cruised back at about 90-95

lets hope it is linked to my temp sender then?!?! i only do a 12 mile round trip to work and don't get to go over 50mph When I have been on longer drives she'll cruise at 80 and tell me its doing 38-40mpg!! So it might just be the short trips that bring it right down -average speed is 17mph

Mine tends to average about 40 mpg when I drive it and about 32 mpg when my girlfriend drives it. I drive it VERY gently though, 5th gear at 35 mph etc. My driving tends to be varied, both M-ways and urban. The best I ever got was 49 mpg on a round trip from my house in Tunbridge Wells (kent) to Southampon and back (approx 200 miles)
mostly on the M25 and M3 but a bit of town driving in and out of urban areas at each end.

If anyone wants to know my secret its to just change gear vey early and cruise between 60 and 70 on the M-ways.... and don't let the girlfriend drive!

urban- 30.7mpg

mixed driving

1.8TS yr2000

parkers site states 35mpg...don't think that means urban only though

cheers guys you have confirmed that it must be a problem with my temp switch/sender that is telling the engine its cold when its not?!?! does anyone know if this could be the case?

Mines also 2000 (w)

I get anything between 32 and 39 depending on how I drive it and if town or m/way.

a little older 1999 V 1.8 TS, average runs to and from work etc around 33-35, motorway miles about 38-39.. ( ie runs of more the 150 miles)

I also have a faulty temp sender, averaging 27mpg so I guess we should sort it out!

my 1.8T Quattro struggles to stay above 30MPG, driving really sensibly too. Had it remapped (some say it can help MPG figures) and flushed the engine with Redex, no change. The book figure says a combined cycle of 29MPG but im only doing that on long gentle drives! Anyone think there could be something wrong? Its been hooked up to VagCom, no faults detected.

that does seem low.
I get 30mpg in s3 normal driving with some bouts of putting my foot dowm.
long distance drives on m/way etc its more 38mpg

29.4, mostly urban, AC and sidelights on all the time.

Lowest on DIS was 6 :D

My 2000 X 1.8T averages 33.5mpg according to the DIS

i dont think i have ever got over 30mpg on any journey. i get about 22-24 mpg avergae normally.......i drove it for three days once around and about not going over 3k revs and still managed 28mpg although i was really proud of that figure. iit sucks

so for a 1.8 Turbo driven quite sensible 28.4 is low!! I think the temp sender being faulty must be affecting it? anyone know if this is an easy job?

please, i'm gonna keep an eye here and find out what the deal is as my car has always been poor,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and its lucky for me to get 280 miles to a full tank. costs me an arm and a leg

lol, with my coil pack or woteva is wrong with my car at the Mo, i just got 250 miles to the tank which works out as about 16-18mpg

gonna sell the car and buy a ferrari, would be cheaper in the long ****** run

The temp sensor is an easy job mate, and its only about £20 so just change it. It causes overfuelling, hence your low MPG.

are there any posts on herer to show how to change it, i think i mite have to give it a whirl. the parts can be bought online cant they? vagparts.com or summin similar? i'm not one for DIY usually but the garages are doing my head in. My car is hesitating and spluttering and the garage took it for a drive and booted it and couldnt tell. Just said" thats got impressive performance"

I assume theyre just not used to it so they cant feel the difference when summin goes wrong

ive just got a haynes manual from the library! it looks fairly straight forward but I'm not keen on doing it!! You have to know what type of sensor you need as there are a few different ones!! I founf one at a local dealer £20, He said tis straight forward but you need to drain coolant first!

My average at the moment is 41.6!!

And I don't hang about either!!:racer:

well u clearly dont have a 1.8t then.

U suck :nunu:

Read it again, i was quoting a previous comment made by LaSarthe&Back saying he averaged 41 mpg.

i cant be doing with draining the coolant, i only just had my waterpump changed, still, if you do get yours fixed or find out anything new be sure to let me know. I'l be getting mine tested soon so fingers crossed we'l get to the bottom of it. These supposes "BulletProof engines" DONT HALF HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS

ha ha

Your right he aint driving a Turbo!! your right when I brought mine Bulletproof was a selling point!! Still they are relativel minor faults, Can you imagine how long the threads ould be on a peugeot or citreon site!!

problem is though everything is not cheap to fix......and i took my car back to the garage (see my other post) and he put it on VAG and it come up with no errors, its drinkin petrol, missfiring and spluttering and fourth and fifth gears and apparently nothing wrong with it. so now in order to find out why i need to drive 20 miles to the nearest specialist in order to plug it into the computer and take it for a drive and analyse the inparticular fuigures....all of which i know nothing about, apparently it could be a lambda probe causing the problem. expensive part. ah well

I get 310 miles out of the tankfull and an average of 30.5mpg 50/50 driving (go to work by bypass, come back home through the town), not hanging about either. I keep trying to get a bit more out of tankfull as i thought it was a bit low, however, i can't be bothered driving sensible at very low speeds plus i always seem to be in a hurry somewhere lol

i give up.............15 mpg 10 mpg............i'm not selling the car now anyway as i wouldnt buy a slow diesel, it'd have to be a fast diesel so i'm gonna loose either way. Gonna wait till i buy a house, sell the car then and buy an old supra or 205 gti. summin fast but bangerish. cant go back to my metro days now i've tasted speed

Ha ha, I am, and 242bhp of it!!

It's all about knowing how to drive it! Lowest instantaneous I've seen is 7.1. Even then, my average was 36.9.

same for me with my quattro and i don't even have 2nd gear! - going to get the temp sensor changed on the next service though

My service is due now after 12k even though it was meant to be 20k longlife. I wont get the longlife ones done again. Maybe when i get the car serviced it will be ok again........prob get my temp sensor changed too. dunno where to take the car now though. had problems with most garages in my area. Need sum 1 i can trust
