    Question Turbo problems

    Hi guys!

    I've been scouring the web looking for some answers to the problems I'm having with the turbo on my S3.

    I found a couple of articles, which led me to this forum. So I signed up.

    The turbo would always cut out intermittently, usually in 3rd gear.

    The turbo would kick in and the car would surge off, so I'd have to lift off because I knew it would knock the turbo out if I didn't.

    But recently, it's got worse until now it's just not working at all.

    I was on the M42 t'other day and it kicked in briefly while going through 6th, but instead of the whistle, I got a screach and then it cut out again.

    I've had this noise before, which is usually a prelude to the turbo cutting out.

    I've never had a turbo-driven car before, so I've no idea what's going on.

    I read about the MAF being a possible culprit, but I'm a total bird when it comes to cars, so I've no idea what that means!

    What I don't want is to be forking out for a new turbo.

    So any advice would be great!

    How long have you had the car and the problem, I had some issues similar to this when I first had my cav turbo remapped... kept over boosting and then cutting out. Has your car been mapped? MAF is a sensor housed next to the Airbox and buts its unlikely it that, not really sure but could be either software or actuator... sure someone will be along to help out!

    Hi Steve, and thanks for the reply!

    Like I said, I'm a total bird with cars, so I've no idea what remapping is.

    I've had the problem since I first bought the car in March 2006.

    It's always been a problem, but very intermittent.

    It's only this last month where it's worsened quite dramatically...

    I just found an article on how turbos work on How Stuff Works.

    Good article, but based on this, the problem I'm having could be coming from just about any part of the damn thing!

    Fairly sure your N75 valve is dodgy.

    It regulates the boost the turbo should produce, and it can cause dodgy surging.

    No way to check it other than to swap with another.

    Do a search, quite common.

    Hi Andy, I imagine this isn't going to be cheap to sort out?

    In the meantime, am I OK to keep driving around? I don't want be making things worse...

    No offence, but as you say you dont really know what is going on, and your symptoms are not the best described to be honest!

    I would suggest you take it to a speacialist VAG place, and get some diagnostics and simple checks done.
    You could cause a lot more damage even if its something simple, but your descripition of "cutting out" could be a aimple boost leak or something far more serious and expensive.

    Most valves and sensors are pretty cheap inthe scale of things, but if you take it to a dodgy garage and they change everything tryingot fix ti, it will be costly. Take it to a specialist, get proper diagnosis and then replace what needs repalcing, it will be the best way!
    Where abouts are you from, maybe you should be asking for recommendatiions of people to fix your car...?

    Why would I know what's going on? I know nothing about cars, other than I know what's a good car and what isn't.

    I'm not sure how I can give you any more detail. What I've described is the entirity of the problem.

    If I were to tell you anything else, then I'd either be lieing or just embelishing things.

    I'm from south Yorkshire. I know fo three VAG dealerships, but they're really expensive.

    They usually want a 80-120 inspection fee, which is just extortionate...
