VAG.com lead and software

Guys,

I have seen this on ebay but i dont know if its the correct one for an Audi 1.8t 1998 model car. Is it even worth getting this type of kit from places like Ebay?

How do you know if its the one and the software provided dont send a virus to your car?

Virus to your car? - it only reads data, doesn't write it as far as i'm aware so I doubt that's possible.

You will still need to buy the VAG-COM software for the cable to work so why not buy the original lead whilst your at it to ensure it works?

That is the correct one for your car. For the price you could get it anyway, and if it is junk then you haven't lost much.

Ah ok, where do i get the original one from? Does it come with the software too?

Im just weary when it comes to computer software especially from ebay, i wouldnt want to corrupt the car with software i bought from ebay. But then i guess it only does readings rather than uploads.

Sorry my work mode just kicking in, just ignore my system analyst waffle, we are just extra carefull when it comes to software.

There is a free version of the software that you can use with an interface like you found on ebay, but it has limited functionality.

Just so you know your car isn't CAN-BUS so you don't need the top of the range versions.
