Can you hear your engine?

Just checking, (and may well be getting obsessive after a cam belt, fan belt changed at the stealers recently) but sitting at Idle inside the car, i can hear a high pitched whirrr coming from the engine. The engine noise does not appear when the car first starts, and makes no difference when the interior fan is switched off.

The actual 'engine' noise in minimal (2000, 39K on the clock), but I would have thought I would hear very little from the fan belt if I was sitting with the doors closed. Would a sound dampner undertray help - it is missing - or does the fan belt need tightened etc.

Again the noise is not extremely loud, just a wee tad annoying. Not sure if the noise was there before, as I just bought the car, and had the belts changed immediately

Thought I would bring this up again, as the high pitched noise is getting even more high pitched of late.. defo the fan belt , as the tone changes when I turn the wheels...

The noise is a only really noticeable sitting at say a traffic light! Is it just me, no obvious play in the pulleys etc.?

could be your fuel pump its under the car behind the drivers seat i think

if the tone changes when you turn the wheels i would have said it sounds like your power steering pump

it could however be any of the Devices attached to the Drive belt as moving the steering adjusts the load on the belt there four making the pitch change it may be the belt is to tight causing bearings to be a little noisy and as the PAS pumps seem reasoabally Reliable on the S3 i would think the most likely culprit to be the Altonator with its fancy Free Wheel setup in the pully

I would either take it to your Stealers or local Audi Specilist if you are worried as i have hurt of Aux belts Failing due to incorrect tension and then Wrapping themselves up in the cam belt causing all kinds of Problems

if i am stationary and move the steering wheel on mine you can hear a whine noise - every power steering car i have ever had has done this, try it on a Cooper S if you think an S3 is noisy...

Yeah not the petrol pump, and the dealer changed the belt two months ago, but I am taking the car to an Audi Specialist for it's 40K and will get them to check then...]

My local VAG specialist suggested that I get the Alternator Belt changed at the same time as he was doing the CamBelt + Tensioner and water-pump on my 2001 S3, he said it was worth the extra couple of £££'s for the peace of mind.

Needless to say I took his advice, even though I'd not heard about Alternator Belts causing problems, until now!

The alternator belt(Aux belt as some would call it), needs to come off for the cambelt change, so for a £20 and no added cost to labour, I can't see anyone not changing it in the process!
